Fast 4: TEDxPurdueU

Here are 4 things that you need to know to get you ready for this year’s group of TEDxPurdueU speakers!

TED Talks have included a wide range of topics

Although “TED” is short for Technology, Entertainment, and Design, these aren’t the only topics that speakers give talks on. Thousands of Talks have been given, with notable topics including religion, sustainability, business, and culture, the topic most-often discussed with 470 Talks to date.

A Convos Alumna is a TED Global Fellow

Spring 2016’s Artist-In-Residence, Meklit, was named a TED Global Fellow in 2009. The Global Fellows are a group of 300 innovators from a global scope of disciplines. Every year, 40 new Fellows are named who then share their stories of growth and impact. Watch Meklit’s November 2015 Talk below!

TED Talks have been given for nearly 30 years

In 1984, Richard Saul Wurman, the creator of TED, thought that technology, entertainment, and design could create something new and unique. The first TED Conference showcased an e-book, a demonstration of a compact disc, and 3D graphics from Lucasfilm. The event, though ambitious, was not successful and ended up loosing money. It wasn’t until 1990, six years later, that TED got back up and running and became the annual global conference that it is today. You can read about TED’s history in more depth by clicking here!

There’s a difference between “TED” and “TEDx” events

“TED” Conferences showcase more than 50 Talks over the course of a week, each with broad ideas that are connected as the week goes on. “TEDx” events, like TEDxPurdueU, are more independent. Not only are they smaller (TEDxPurdueU has 16 speakers this year), they are also fully planned and coordinated by the community in which the Talks will take place.
