Mark Morris was once a performer in the production
Beginning in 1989, Morris was not only directing and choreographing Dido and Aeneas, but he was also a dancer in the work. He cast himself in a dual role as Dido and the Sorceress (on right) who plots her demise, performing both until 2000.
A lot of work goes into each performance
There are about 19 dancers, 20 ensemble members, and 22 lighting, costume, and scenic designers who all work to bring the story of Dido and Aeneas to life under choreographer Mark Morris’ baton. You can learn more about each member of the company here!
The story takes place over 5 different acts
Over the course of 5 acts, the tale of Dido and Aeneas will be told by the dancers through intricate movements of expressiveness. The dancers will move in time with the sounds of the live orchestra and vocalists to create scenes from The Palace, The Cave, The Grove, and The Ships. Mark Morris has collaborated with a famous Convos Alumnus
In 1995 Morris and past Convos performer Yo-Yo Ma collaborated on “Falling Down Stairs.” In this excerpt, Ma performs the “Sarabande” from Bach’s Third Cello Suite as he praises Morris for the way “he thinks of himself as a musician, the way he choreographs, the way he knows the music.”
