Emerging Technology—Risks and Rewards

Purdue University’s Dawn or Doom technology conference explores the effects of rapidly emerging technologies through interactive presentations and events. Each talk is led by a leading national expert or prominent Purdue researcher—all visualized by a graphic artist in real time.

What is the future of work if AIs and robots can do it all for us? Is the internet affecting our mental health? What will it mean when networked vehicles, appliances and other devices surround us pervasively and persistently? Why should we care? Given that learning doesn’t just apply to the living any longer, these questions are integral to human lives and livelihoods.

Dawn or Doom ’19 is part of Purdue’s 150th anniversary celebration—a yearlong festival of ideas aimed at making giant leaps to advance some of today’s most important issues and enjoy a future that we would all prefer to be more dawn than doom.

Discussion tracks for this year’s conference:

• Machines: Artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous vehicles and drones
• Mind: Internet and social media effects
• Body: Bioengineering and human design
• Space: Exploration and Mars habitats
• Data: Internet of Things, privacy and cybersecurity

The conference setup allows attendees to attend as many (or as few) talks as they like while engaging with the speakers and participating in a wide variety of related activities, from technology-themed art exhibits to interactive virtual- and augmented-reality tours.
