The New York Times
The supply chain of English classical theatre to Purdue remains strong thanks to New York City’s Aquila Theatre. Following its take on Macbeth and The Great Gatsby last spring, Aquila will present Jane Austen’s fan-favorite Pride and Prejudice. For more than 200 years, the romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy has captivated audiences in novel form and the 2005 film version starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. This performance gives Austen fans a chance to see the love affair full of delightful and romantic misunderstandings, class satire, and English country dances come to life thanks to her beloved rom com.
Pre-Show Discussion
2-part pre-show discussion of the play adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with Professor Tara Cuthbertson, Purdue University’s Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts.
ABOUT THE STORY
Published in 1813, Jane Austen’s ultimate romantic comedy, Pride and Prejudice, has stood the test of time. As the Bennet sisters try to navigate their way toward love and marriage, Austen humorously skewers the hypocrisies and absurdities of the English class system, and puts the thoughts and feelings of her women characters front and center. Filled with unforgettable characters, this sharp social satire has it all: wit, romance and lots of dancing!
