Salvant, regularly and rightly, is considered one of the greatest jazz singers of her generation, but that label sells her short.

A tuneful way to prepare for Halloween would be spinning up Cécile McLorin Salvant’s new album, Ghost Song. The New York-based jazz singer wrote, recorded, and released the work all during the COVID-19 pandemic, exploring not only the metaphor of the creepy ghost story but also ghosts of her past and present while feeling ghosted during pandemic lockdown. A French-Haitian phenom, she returns to Convos as a multiple Grammy Award winner, living up to the promise of her early career when she released her first record backed by Jean-François Bonnel and his Paris Quintet a year before she won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.
