The Cumbia All Stars Get the Party Started
Infusing Peruvian tradition with a revitalized sound, the Cumbia All Stars will have you on your feet as you swing and dance to the rhythm of the “cumbia.” This general admission performance will take place at 8 p.m. Sept. 25 in the Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms.
This performance is made possible with Friends support from IU Health Arnett and campus support from the Latino Cultural Center and Purdue University Dining & Catering.
Ticket holders are invited to arrive early for a pre-show cumbia dance lesson taught by the Purdue Latin & Ballroom Dance Team at 7 p.m.
The Cumbia All Stars, comprised of alumni from Peru’s “cumbia” bands, resurrect the classics of their heyday and honor that legacy with new compositions. The then-teenaged musicians planted the roots of their sound in Lima and saw it spread to remote cities of the Amazonian jungle.
The “cumbia” was born from a diverse collection of African, Spanish, and Central American Indian influences as it merged and morphed its way through the Caribbean and Central America in the late 1800s. Each nation infused its own identity into the “cumbia” sound.
