Meet West Lafayette’s 3rd Street Collective, opener for Magdalena Bay
3rd Street Collective is a RnB-HipHop-rock band from West Lafayette, IN.
What was your first public performance?
We played a house show on Evergreen Street in September 2023. It was chaotic due to needing a last-minute drum sub, but it went really well!
How did 3rd Street Collective come to be?
The band was in Purdue Jazz Band in 2023 and formed from there.

Where’d you get the name, 3rd Street Collective, from?
We rehearse in Hagle Hall on 3rd Street and there’s a jazz venue in Chicago called the Fulton Street Collective, so we just combined the names.
What are you looking forward to with this upcoming set?
This is our opportunity to play for our biggest crowd yet, and in the most professionally exciting context yet.
Are you involved in any other Purdue musical organizations?
Purdue Bands & Orchestras (PBO) and Jazz Education Network (JEN). Grace used to play bass for the Purduettes (PMO). Aamir is in Chauncie, Jascha and Grace are in Lyra. Jack is in Silver Wizard.
What makes Purdue/West Lafayette’s music scene special?
The scene itself is very welcoming. There are so many people to meet and make connections with, whether it has to do with music or not. Every time you go to a show, you meet at least one new person. There’s no barrier to entry for new bands. All the venues are welcoming to new artists and diverse genres.
Which artists inspire you?
Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Jacob Collier and Earth Wind & Fire, Steely Dan, Tom Misch, Erykah Badu, Rush, Braxton Cook, Sam Greenfield, New Jazz Underground, Casiopea, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Bruno Mars, and many other bands from different genres. The list is endless!

What’s your favorite song you’ve written?
“Marc and Sharon Hagle Hall” (We’re still working on a name) because it’s a song that represents our sound really well.
Favorite song to cover?
“I Wish” by Stevie Wonder and “Them Changes” by Thundercat. These are songs we love to make our own and add longer jam sections so we can really personalize them with solos.
Favorite performance memory?
Playing our first show of 2025 at the Nest after returning from winter break. Best crowd ever and the band was locked in! We’ve had so many great times at the Nest and Sunhouse. We love crowd interaction the most, it’s what truly makes the difference between good and great shows.

When can we see 3rd Street Collective perform next (besides your opening set)?
Currently our next show is on April 12th for the Sound of Purdue but follow us for more show dates and details @3sc_band on Instagram!
Where do you see the band going in the future?
We are currently finalizing our originals before we record them for our EP. Expect our music on all streaming platforms within the next few months!
