Five classic holiday favorites
Happy Holidays! The artists of the 2015-16 Season are here to help you prepare for a fun and relaxing holiday with five holiday classic favorites.
1. Cécile McLorin Salvant
With large vocal range and plenty of jazz, Cécile McLorin Salvant brings “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to life with a soulful energy that would make Judy Garland, the song’s original singer, very proud.
2. Annie
The Broadway cast of Annie tap-danced through a live performance of “A New Deal for Christmas” during the 2012 “Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.”
3. Mark Morris Dance Group
From “The Hard Nut,” Mark Morris‘ choreographical take on Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” comes “Waltz of the Snowflakes.” The show has been running since January 1991, about 1 year shy of the 100th anniversary of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece.
4. SFJAZZ Collective
When they aren’t exploring the works of John Coltrane, Stevie Wonder, or Michael Jackson, the SFJAZZ Collective is busy preparing for the holiday season. Back in 2007, they performed Thelonious Monk’s “San Francisco Holiday” at Jazz à Vienne in Vienne, France.
5. Les Violons du Roy
This 15-piece Québécois ensemble brings the spirit of the holidays to life with their “Treasury of Baroque Christmas Concerti.” Below is just a sample from the 30-song album that shows just how spirited Les Violons du Roy is about this time of year.
