Thompson is also the 2023 American Pianists Awards winner and recipient of the prestigious Cole Porter Fellowship in Jazz. Thompson is the next rising piano star in the jazz world. Hailing from West Orange, New Jersey, Thompson began his journey at a young age, studying at The Calderone School of Music before honing his skills at Jazz House Kids and NJPAC Jazz for Teens. His talent earned him a place at the renowned Juilliard School, where he completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music. Thompson’s musical career has been nothing short of remarkable, performing alongside jazz greats like Ron Carter, Christian McBride, and Cécile McLorin Salvant. His deep love and respect for the art form shine through in every note, making him one of the most compelling pianists of his generation.
Joining Thompson on stage is David Alvarez III, a dynamic jazz drummer from Detroit. Alvarez brings a rich background in jazz performance, having studied at the University of Michigan and toured nationally with esteemed musicians like Benny Green. His rhythmic versatility and experience with iconic groups such as the Clayton Brothers Quintet make him a driving force in this quartet. With his roots in gospel drumming and a passion for jazz, Alvarez’s performances are full of energy and emotion.
On saxophone, Julian Lee adds a soulful and versatile dimension to the group’s sound. Lee, a recipient of the 2017 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award, is a master of the alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones, as well as the clarinet and flute. His impressive resume includes performances with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis, and Jon Batiste. Lee’s ability to adapt to different styles and his extensive experience playing with the finest big bands in the world make him a captivating presence on stage.
Completing the quartet is Sebastian Rios on bass, a composer and a key member of the American trio New Jazz Underground. A protégé of the legendary bassist Ron Carter, Rios has worked with luminaries like Jon Batiste and Emmet Cohen. His innovative approach to the bass and his creative compositions have earned him recognition as a defining voice in modern jazz. Rios’s deep understanding of the genre and his seamless ability to blend tradition with innovation bring a unique texture to the quartet’s sound.
