Piano Performance: Friends of Convos Special Initiative
Instrument makers practice a special art. They possess the skills of a designer, an engineer, and an artist–all at once. The names of the world’s most storied instrument makers are legendary: Stradivarius violins, Martin guitars, Bach trumpets, Zildjian cymbals, to name but a few. And of course, there are Steinway pianos.
But there are Steinways, and then there are Steinways. A 9-foot Steinway concert grand piano–known as the model “D”–is the global gold standard for concert pianos. Spectacular works of art in themselves, they are hand-built machines of extraordinary complexity that, in the hands of an accomplished artist, allow for nuanced, whisper-like delicacy as well as roaring, orchestral crescendo. The expressive power, beauty, and versatility of the instrument become far more than the sum of their 12,000 parts.
Now, with our new Steinway D on campus–courtesy of a generous gift by Janet and John Nine–we have a way to collectively celebrate the artistic transformation it will allow. A special trio of piano performances are planned for the 2015-16 season, and it is thrilling to think of which performers we will have the opportunity to bring, now that we have an instrument worthy of their craft.
These grand endeavors require special support. Just like the gift of the piano itself, your support can help us add to the repertoire of artists who will grace the stage. Consider designating a gift to support piano performance today.
