Here are 4 things you need to know to get ready for April’s performance of Once!
The film version had a huge return on investment
After spending several years in development with the Irish Film Board, Once was created with a budget of about $150,000. It premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and entered the American box office later that May with a 97%, “Certified Fresh” rating from “Rotten Tomatoes.” It went on to gross nearly $21 million total, which was about 140x its budget.
The original film won an Oscar
“Falling Slowly,” the song performed in the music shop by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová in the film version of Once, won the Oscar for Best Original Song during the Academy’s 80th Award ceremony. The recording beat out “Raise It Up” from “August Rush” and 3 songs from Disney’s “Enchanted.”
Less is more
The cast serves as its own orchestra throughout the course of the musical, each member playing his or her own instrument on stage. A bar set is mainly used to tell the story of Once and it includes chairs that line the stage left and right where exiting cast members simply step to the side and sit.
The musical has won a lot of Tony awards
At the 66th annual award ceremony in 2012, Once was nominated for 11 awards, winning 8, including Best Musical and Best Sound Design, as well as Steve Kazee’s win for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his role as Guy.
