SUMMARY:Guangdong Modern Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:LIU QI Choreography \nGuangdong Province is a bridge to inland China\, a gateway through which the world saw China “open up” during economic reforms and one of the nation’s fastest-growing regions. It’s also a thriving hub of modern-dance movement\, education and opportunity\, led by the 1992 inception of the Guangdong Modern Dance Company as China’s first modern-dance ensemble. Hailed by The New York Times as “a pacesetter with a difference\,” GMDC explores China’s modern identity\, cultural history and social perspectives through contemporary dance. GMDC’s Beyond Calligraphy is a two-episode work channeling the flowing\, detailed grace of Chinese calligraphy as both inspiration and point of departure for dialogue about ancient and modern culture. It’s a performance The Washington Post described as “full of meditative grace (and) sharp\, cut-crystal physicality.” \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 7PM | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin Guangdong Modern Dance Company’s choreographer\, Mrs. LIU Qi\, for a discussion about the evening’s performance. \n  \nPurdue University and Purdue Convocations are actively monitoring the outbreak of respiratory illnesses caused by the novel coronavirus first identified in Wuhan\, Hubei Province\, China. The members of the Guangdong Modern Dance Company (GMDC) successfully passed their health screening upon entering the United States approximately two weeks ago\, and their health continues to be monitored throughout their tour in the US. Convos\, Purdue\, and the GMDC are committed to the safety of our patrons\, colleagues\, and talent\, and will continue to insure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Neyla Pekarek
DESCRIPTION:Cellist / vocalist Neyla Pekarek—formerly of the Grammy®️-nominated indie-folk band the Lumineers—certainly chose a compelling muse for her 2019 solo debut\, Rattlesnake. While on horseback with her son in 1925\, Kate Slaughterback confronted a sudden\, terrifying advance of rattlesnakes. First\, she used her gun to fend them off. When the bullets ran out? She fashioned a makeshift club. After two hours\, 140 snakes were dead and the Rattlesnake Kate legend was forged. Pekarek envisions Kate’s life surrounding this incident through a rollicking\, expansive song cycle of Americana\, blues\, ’60s pop\, Tin Pan Alley and doo-wop. From Kate’s story\, Pekarek has created a cathartic battle cry about asserting identity\, refusing to capitulate and defying expectations. Sometimes you need to show them all the poison you possess inside.

SUMMARY:Artemis
DESCRIPTION:“Their set played like an expertly crafted mixtape\, moving from a knotty version of Thelonious Monk’s Brilliant Corners to a surprisingly dramatic arrangement of the Beatles’ ‘Fool on the Hill.’” – Rolling Stone \nTrue to its Greek goddess namesake\, the all-star jazz supergroup Artemis draws back its bow and strikes true at high-wire interplay and pure joy. Hailing from America\, Canada\, Israel\, Chile and Japan\, the sextet features Renee Rosnes (piano / musical director)\, Ingrid Jensen (trumpet)\, Anat Cohen (clarinet)\, Noriko Ueda (bass)\, Allison Miller (drums) and tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana\, the latter of whom Convocations presented to sold-out Carnahan Hall crowds in 2014. Regularly leading their own bands\, the artists of Artemis gather their genius for selections spanning Thelonious Monk to the Beatles—presented with passion\, power and sensitivity. This performance represents Convocations’ kick-off contribution to the 30th annual Purdue Jazz Festival\, a Purdue University Bands event bringing more than 2\,500 middle- and high-school students to campus for clinics and concerts. \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 7PM | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin composer\, jazz pianist and music educator Dr. Judd Danby for a pre-show discussion.

SUMMARY:Yi-Nuo Wang\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Purdue Convocations has long been honored to present classical artists as their careers accelerate under auspices of the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition. Fresh from her first-place finish in 2018\, Chinese pianist Yi-Nuo Wang continues that tradition\, as well as the continued animation of Convocations’ exploration of piano repertoire on a Steinway Concert Grand Piano gifted by Janet and John Nine. Wang began playing at age 4 in Beijing\, won her first competition at age 5 and studied at Beijing’s prestigious Central Conservatory of Music. Now an active performer alongside ensembles in Asia\, Europe and the United States\, Wang lives in New York—where she is pursuing her undergraduate degree at The Juilliard School and making her New York recital debut this season at Carnegie Hall.

SUMMARY:1984
DESCRIPTION:For 70 years\, George Orwell’s uneasily prescient novel 1984 has both unmoored readers from recognizable reality and helped them ruminate on the society they see. An influential\, evocative work of fiction that’s timeless and timely\, 1984 finds everyman Winston Smith unexpectedly challenging a world in which totalitarian government reigns supreme\, technology is a weapon of propaganda and control\, and Big Brother is always watching. It’s a story suited to the bold\, ensemble-driven physicality of Aquila Theatre\, which will stage a ferocious\, provocative and critically praised adaptation of Orwell’s work from award-winning playwright Michael Gene Sullivan. As does the novel\, the Aquila Theatre’s production forces its audience to consider: How far are we from Orwell’s dystopian nightmare…or in what ways are we already there? \nPERFORMANCES \nOct. 16 at 7:30PM\nOct. 17 at 7:30PM \nPurdue Convocations is pleased to welcome back Aquila Theatre Company after its successful run of Frankenstein at Purdue University in October 2018. \nPRE-SHOW DISCUSSION | 6:30PM | BOTH NIGHTS | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin Dr. Swati Srivastava\, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science\, for a discussion about the evening’s performance.

SUMMARY:The Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:“Of the many things hidden from the knowledge of man\, nothing is more unintelligible than the human heart.” Legendary poet Homer uttered those words\, even as his literary works disproved them. Across centuries and civilizations\, his epic poem The Odyssey became one of the world’s most famous tales. This mighty\, moving story follows Odysseus on his decade-long journey home from war—using skill\, strength and intellect to survive a fantastical array of creatures\, sorcerers\, monsters and divine forces. In the tradition of oral performance by skilled bards across the Mediterranean\, Aquila Theatre brings The Odyssey to life onstage. A tree of life from which Western fiction grew\, The Odyssey remains a testament to the human spirit\, the will to wander and the yearning for home. \n\nThis performance is part of a two-production mini-residency with Aquila Theatre Company. Following Aquila’s dynamic production of Frankenstein last season\, Convocations will again engender deep curricular engagement across campus with stage adaptations of the iconic literary works\, Homer’s Odyssey and Orwell’s 1984. \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 6:30PM | STEWART CENTER 279\nJoin Dr. Mike Johnston\, an Associate Professor in the Department of English\, and Dr. Daniel Conner\, Assistant Professor of Teaching in the School of Languages and Cultures\, for a discussion about the evening’s performance. \nPLEASE NOTE: \nThe Aquila Theatre production of The Odyssey will include simulated gunshots (audio) and replica/dummy firearms.  \n2019/20 BIG READ\nPurdue’s Big Read is designed to enrich Purdue and Greater Lafayette through literature. Each year we select a great book\, create a calendar of engaging events\, including lectures\, book group discussions\, performances\, workshops and author visits\, and then provide free copies of the text to the community. Studies show that book ownership contributes to academic achievement\, educational attainment\, and economic development. \nThe 2019-2020 selection is Emily Wilson’s splendid translation of The Odyssey. SUMMARY:Los Angeles Guitar Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“The world’s hottest classical ensemble or its tightest pop band? However it helps you to think about the LAGQ\, keep the emphasis on superlatives for its unrivaled joy\, technical elan and questing spirits.” – Los Angeles Times \nGuitar virtuoso Andrés Segovia likened his instrument to a small orchestra\, “every string a different color\, a different voice.” Since 1980\, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (LAGQ) has embraced that diverse\, adventurous spirit—infusing new vigor into canonical classics while bridging classical\, jazz\, rock and pop in contemporary explorations. For its American Guitar Masters program\, the LAGQ celebrates U.S. guitar innovators\, including selections from Chet Atkins\, Jimi Hendrix\, Frank Zappa\, and Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs\, guitar settings of Sousa and Copland\, chorales and chaconnes\, and the centerpiece “Road to the Sun.” Jazz legend Pat Metheny wrote this melodic\, groove-filled tone poem specifically for the LAGQ\, whom the Los Angeles Times hailed as “one of the wonders of the chamber music scene rooted in the West.” \nPRE-SHOW DISCUSSION | 2PM | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin Los Angeles Guitar Quartet member Bill Kanengiser and composer\, jazz pianist and music educator Dr. Judd Danby for a pre-show discussion.

SUMMARY:Cameron Graves
DESCRIPTION:“His contrastingly romantic and ardent chord-work suggest what Rachmaninoff might have sounded like if he’d played in a contemporary fusion band.” — The Guardian \nHailed by Rolling Stone as “the house pianist for the party at the end of the universe\,” Cameron Graves is revitalizing funk\, jazz\, soul and fusion with kaleidoscopic\, kinetic energy. After cutting his teeth on Chopin\, Coltrane and Van Halen\, Graves co-founded L.A.’s West Coast Get Down (WCGD) alongside the supernova saxophone of Kamasi Washington. Known as the Wu-Tang Clan of jazz\, the WCGD collective is prolific when united or untethered. Graves’ 2017 debut album\, Planetary Prince\, emerged from a marathon WCGD recording session. Whether turning Ellington on its ear or achieving supersonic speeds typically reserved for prog rock and metal\, Graves transposes a fretboard ferocity and fluidity to 88 keys—music to quicken your pulse as easily as it broadens your consciousness.

SUMMARY:Margo Price
DESCRIPTION:“One of the most compelling country talents to come out of Nashville in recent memory” — Vulture \nIn 2015\, Margo Price called it a win if she had enough gas in the tank to make her next gig. By 2016\, she was among country music’s most celebrated new artists. Price’s debut album\, Midwest Farmer’s Daughter\, made numerous top-10 lists; NPR called it “the hard-won arrival of an artist who feels like she’s always been here.” Her 2017 follow-up\, All American Made\, earned widespread acclaim and a 2019 Grammy® nomination for Best New Artist. Price’s voice is a brassy\, sassy clarion call to wry\, weary\, and wise stories of heartache and determination. Fusing Nashville country\, Memphis soul and Texas twang\, she tips her cap to Waylon\, Willie\, Loretta and Dolly while challenging country conventions through brutally honest\, beautifully poetic portraits of everyday life. \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 6:30PM | PMU West Faculty Lounge\nJoin McKenzie Isom\, a  Ph.D. student in the Department of History\, for a discussion about the evening’s performance.
