SUMMARY:Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
DESCRIPTION:Out-of-control amazing! — The Wall Street Journal\nFrom that faded yet unmistakable LP cover stored in your basement to gracing Greater Lafayette’s largest stage\, Carole King’s Tapestry is a standard-bearer for 1970s folk music. But before she struck that barefoot pose near the window while her cat\, Telemachus\, almost stole the shot\, King penned a slew of 1960s hits for pop\, R&B and rock royalty\, starting with “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” by the Shirelles and then rounding out the decade with “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” for the Queen of Soul herself\, Aretha Franklin. These songs and many more penned by King—like James Taylor’s “You’ve Got a Friend”—fuel this jukebox of a musical that will make you “Feel the Earth Move.”\n\n \n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES

SUMMARY:Beatrice Rana
DESCRIPTION:Beatrice RanaPiano \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRSVP \n\n\n\nGROUP ORDER FORM\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSensitivity\, sophistication and control\, along with a touch of magic. The New York Times\n\n\n\nThe New York Times hailed young Italian pianist Beatrice Rana as “one of the most insightful and prodigiously gifted artists of the new generation.” In 2013\, she earned the Silver Prize and Audience Award at the prestigious Van Cliburn competition. Since then\, this Gramophone award-winning artist has headlined Lincoln Center\, Carnegie Hall\, Kennedy Center and venues worldwide. Rana delivers ravishing performances as instinctively human as they are intellectually engaged with compositional subtext. Her Convos program will highlight the technical and emotional complexities of Frédéric Chopin’s four scherzos\, ranging from tranquil and tender to terse and tense; a series of Claude Debussy études the composer considered suitable only for “remarkable hands”; and a deep exploration of emotional dissonance in an excerpt from Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka ballet. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nFrédéric Chopin: Scherzo No. 1 in B minor\, Op. 20 \n\n\n\nChopin: Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat minor\, Op. 31 \n\n\n\nChopin: Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp minor\, Op. 39 \n\n\n\nChopin: Scherzo No. 4 in E major\, Op. 54 \n\n\n\nClaude Debussy: Études\, Book 1 \n\n\n\nIgor Stravinsky: Petrushka

SUMMARY:Macbeth
DESCRIPTION:Imagine a tragic tale about the physical and psychological toll of political ambition and power-mongering. Does that sound eerily current or quaintly historic? Or is it simply that the themes of Shakespeare’s classic “Scottish Play” remain eminently applicable after 400-plus years? Palace intrigue and shocking betrayals are nothing new. However\, the highly regarded Aquila Theatre will make the relevance surprisingly fresh with their creative vision of this classic. Having toured nationwide for decades\, Aquila continues to earn recognition\, as famed producer and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda recently invited them to celebrate the National Endowment for the Arts in the U.S. Capitol. This electrifying rendition of Macbeth is keenly aware that a certain sound and fury persists. \n\n\n\nThis performance is part of a collaboration with the Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Curriculum to present a two-production residency with Aquila Theatre Company—featuring The Great Gatsby and Macbeth. Following engagements in prior seasons with productions of Frankenstein\, The Odyssey and 1984\, Convocations will again engender deep curricular engagement across campus for students in the Cornerstone program. Faculty across all disciplines\, however\, are also invited to connect to these works for your students. For more information\, contact convos@dev-convocations.pantheonsite.io.  \n\n\n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES \n\n\n\nSupport From:

SUMMARY:The Great Gatsby
DESCRIPTION:Beautifully spoken\, dramatically revealing and crystalline in effect. ― The New Yorker \n\n\n\n\nPublished in 1925\, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby remains a vivid account of how\, in the absence of true equality\, pursuing the “American dream” can lead to devastating effects. Jay Gatsby\, a working-class war veteran\, reinvents himself as a self-made millionaire to become the man he believes his one-time love\, wealthy heiress Daisy Buchanan\, would want. Their rekindled affair triggers a domino effect of destruction\, in which obsession masquerades as love and the wealthy wield prejudice as a weapon. Known for its powerful immersion in classic texts\, Aquila Theatre brings a soberingly relevant reimagination of Fitzgerald’s classic in which Gatsby is a man of color\, setting the stage for themes of class\, racism and discrimination to play vividly inside the meaning of the American dream. \n\n\n\nThis performance is part of a collaboration with the Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Curriculum to This performance is part of a collaboration with the Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Curriculum to present a two-production residency with Aquila Theatre Company—featuring The Great Gatsby and Macbeth. The New York Times\n\n\n\nIt’s no surprise that the family-friendly music of Mexican singer-songwriter Sonia De Los Santos ignites instant happiness. SUMMARY:Emmet Cohen Trio
DESCRIPTION:A delicate touch\, assured\, swaggering swing feel\, and debonair flow. ― The New York Times\nHarkening back to Harlem rent parties of yesteryear\, Live from Emmet’s Place invited online audiences inside the apartment of jazz pianist Emmet Cohen as one of the most welcome of COVID-era pivots. Convos supported these instant-favorite Monday-night livestreams in early 2021\, which grafted Cohen’s fluid grasp of the jazz canon with a deeply grooving rhythm section—featuring bassist Russell Hall and drummer Kyle Poole\, along with a remarkable cast of superlative “houseguests” to create one of the most successful-yet-intimate jazz experiences on the internet. Now\, Convos is thrilled to welcome Cohen’s trio along with some of your favorite Live From Emmet’s Place All-Stars for a real-time\, in-person performance. In 2019\, Cohen’s trio previously backed jazz vocalist Veronica Swift’s Purdue engagement during the same week in which Cohen was named the American Pianists Association’s Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz. Having since lit up legendary nightclubs and jazz festivals worldwide with his inimitable charm\, Cohen will now turn Loeb Playhouse into a Live from Emmet’s Place at Purdue.\n\n \n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 20 \n\n \n / \n \n 8:49 pm \n \n \n\n\n\n\n	\n \n	\n\n\n\n\nRSVP \n\n\n\nGROUP ORDER FORM\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNow a Grammy®-winning folk ambassador\, Abigail Washburn once intended to improve relations between China and the United States by practicing law. As a Chinese prodigy plucking at traditions of the 2\,000-year-old guzheng\, Wu Fei anticipated a career performing only state-sanctioned work. Both women chose a different path. Washburn traded briefcases for banjos and built bridges with groundbreaking tours of China. Wu’s global explorations led her to pick bluegrass with Washburn\, who’s now her Nashville neighbor. In 2020\, these simpatico sisters from two misters released an album of impressionistic intercultural folk that spans Appalachian hills to Xinjiang prairies. Wu and Washburn’s brave\, intimate\, multilingual collaboration offers a compassionate commingling of continents in divisive times—magnifying the beauty and humanity of experiences that transcend traditions or tongues. \n\n\n\nPerformance Support from\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFind out how you can support Purdue Convocations performances.

SUMMARY:Dökk - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: October 26\, 2021\n\n\n\nDökk\, by the Milan\, Italy-based company\, fuse*\, was scheduled to perform in Loeb Playhouse on February 3\, 2022. Due to COVID-19 related complications\, the U.S. tour has been cancelled.  While the Convocations team is currently working to reschedule the performance for a future date\, all tickets purchased for the performance will be refunded automatically. \n\n\n\nIf you purchased with a credit card\, the credit should appear on your billing statement within the next 7-10 business days. Any payments made by cash or check will be refunded via university check and mailed to the current address on file within the next 30 days.  Call (765) 494-3933 for more information. \n\n\n\nWhat if data were a dance partner? Dökk is a daring\, dynamic journey into the subconscious\, the latest expression of artistry through emerging digital technology from Italy’s fuse*. Named after the Icelandic word for “darkness\,” Dökk uses software to synthesize real-time data from four simultaneous sources: Dökk’s musical score; the movement of performer / choreographer Elena Annovi; her heartbeat; and emotional analysis of social media trends at that very moment. This data mashup is vividly visualized through a stunning 3D projection environment. As these data sources shift and change\, each performance of Dökk becomes one-of-a-kind—evoking life’s own random\, unforeseeable whims. Both experimental and empirical\, Dökk illuminates the invisible connections among us all in an intimate\, immersive fusion of light\, sound\, space and movement. \n\n\n\n\nAn unexpected synesthesia of pure cognitive escape.— Exibart \n\n\n\n\nThis engagement with fuse* is a continuation of Purdue Convocations’ Innovator-In-Residence platform—a forum for the investigation of new works that examine\, question and propose ideas in the fluid nexus where humanity and technology intersect. This production further extends the discussion of real-time interactivity from our previous engagement in this series\, the AI-driven musical improvisation of Shimon Robot and Friends—which Convocations presented in February of 2017. \n\n\n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES

SUMMARY:Geneva Lewis
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in New Zealand but raised in the United States\, young violinist Geneva Lewis emits passion for classical music on- and off-stage. Lewis debuted onstage as an 11-year-old prodigy for the Pasadena Symphony. Whether performing solo or as part of the Callisto Trio\, Lewis has since earned national accolades for her musical prowess\, having mastered such pieces as Béla Bartók’s Violin Sonata No. 1\, Paul Schoenfeld’s Four Souvenirs\, and Georg Philip Telemann’s Fantasia No. 7 in E flat major. Lewis’s current concert violin is a Stradivarius believed to have been crafted in 1714. She also engages with communities to promote music education—inspiring children to pick up the violin bow and\, perhaps someday\, experience the thrill of standing ovations like those that often greet her performances. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nClaude Debussy — Violin Sonata [14’] \n\n\n\nI. SUMMARY:The Simon and Garfunkel Story
DESCRIPTION:“For once\, you can believe the hype” – British Theatre Guide\nIf 1960s New York had a playlist\, the unmistakable\, enchanting folk harmonies of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel would make up almost every track. Hits like “Mrs. Robinson\,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Homeward Bound” fueled album sales to the tune of 100 million. And it wasn’t just the Empire State: Your mother or father probably wore out a vinyl copy of Sounds of Silence. Through artful image projection\, rare photos and video\, and a live band performing timeless tunes\, The Simon & Garfunkel Story presents a multimedia experience that culminates with the duo’s 1981 Central Park reunion concert—one of the largest in history with more than a half-million fans singing along. The Simon & Garfunkel Story ensures audiences can do the same 40 years later.\n\n \n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES\n\n

SUMMARY:Joshua Redman Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“Unparalleled among horn players today” – JazzTimes\nWhat began as a brief detour into Brooklyn’s jazz scene for Joshua Redman blossomed into 30 years of ceaseless innovation\, acclaimed recording and passionate performance. Boasting influences that range from John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman to Prince and the Police\, Redman has forged a signature saxophone sound as provocative and forward-looking as it is hard-swinging and soulful. Propelled by bassist Reuben Rogers\, drummer Gregory Hutchinson and pianist Aaron Goldberg\, Redman’s Grammy®-nominated namesake quartet generates a tight and joyous onstage alchemy\, most recently captured on its 2019 album\, Come What May. The quartet’s performance represents Convocations’ kick-off contribution to the 2022 Purdue Jazz Festival\, a Purdue University Bands event that brings more than 2\,500 middle- and high-school students to campus for clinics and concerts. \n\n\n\n \n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES\n\n

SUMMARY:Frida: Viva la Vida
DESCRIPTION:The purely visual contributions of famed artist Frida Kahlo could fill volumes of art history text. But the documentary Frida: Viva La Vida delves as deeply into the artist’s life as it does her stunning imagery exploring her influence on artistic freedom and feminism\, dissecting her dual life as a pioneering artist living in a volatile relationship with Diego Rivera\, and recreating her tortured masterworks like “The Two Fridas\,” “The Broken Column” and “The Wounded Deer” via deft filmmaking and powerful reenactments. Like a museum exhibit on screen\, Frida: Viva La Vida features never-seen letters\, never-heard stories and confessions\, and actual items featured in Kahlo’s unmistakable masterworks. \nRuntime: 1hr 30min \n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Mucca Pazza
DESCRIPTION:John Phillip Sousa would not be amused. \nChicago Tribune\n\n\n\nLike any marching band\, you’ll hear Mucca Pazza coming before you see them. That’s where the similarities end. Mucca Pazza’s original genre-bending compositions are inspired by everything from surf rock to Stravinsky. Then there are the brightly colored\, mismatched thrift-shop get-ups\, a squad of absurdist cheerleaders\, and implausible instrumentation that includes electric guitars\, accordions\, violins and even a cello. A darling of Chicago’s underground music scene since 2004\, Mucca Pazza has performed at Lollapalooza\, Lincoln Center\, the Montreal Jazz Fest and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Series. At Purdue\, this merry band of misfits will roam campus\, providing a variety of free pop-up performances at different spaces. Fusing DIY punk aesthetics\, Balkan brass and marching-band maximalism\, Mucca Pazza presents an eminently danceable embrace of the absurd. \n\n\n\n\n\nPerformances Times and Locations\n\n\n\nThursday\, September 9 \n\n\n\n\nKrach Lawn 11:45 AM\nPurdue Bell Tower 1:15 PM\nMemorial Mall 2:30 PM\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, September 10 \n\n\n\n\nPurdue Bell Tower 4:20 PM\nPurdue Arch at Grant and State 5:20 PM\nGreyhouse Coffee plaza (Northwestern and State) 6:20 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES \n\n

SUMMARY:Hand to Hand
DESCRIPTION:…surreal and poetic.” – USA Today \nSquonk Opera’s Hand to Hand is a magnum opus of music\, mischief and marvelous stagecraft. Rigged like a sailing ship and sized like a house\, two giant puppet hands propel this outdoor spectacle alongside a live performance of propulsive progressive rock from Squonk Opera. For 25 years\, these Pittsburgh post-industrialists have fused music\, design\, science and art to bring people face to face in festive ways that The New York Times has called “ingenious\, hallucinatory and hypnotic.” Indeed\, the only things heavy-handed here are the massive mitts\, which audience members can even help manipulate to become part of the fun. This timely\, boisterous extravaganza of comic invention\, fantastic jams and shared experience is a show of hands that’s larger than life. \n\n SUPPORT THIS FREE PERFORMANCE \nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES

SUMMARY:Omar Apollo
DESCRIPTION:“Apollo’s music stands out in the generosity of his lyrics and the vulnerability of his performance.” – ROLLING STONE \nIn just a few years time · Omar Apollo has gone from teenage strummer to one of the most hotly-tipped R&B artists of his generation. The Indiana-raised Mexican-American singer-songwriter picked up a guitar at the age of 11 and never looked back. His success began when he had 3000 followers on SoundCloud and his friend paid him $30 to upload his music to streaming services. His single “Ugotme” quickly gained traction · and to date has accumulated over 30 million streams in the US across all platforms. \nAfter two back-to-back sold-out headlining tours · memorable festival appearances at Camp Flog Gnaw and Lollapalooza · and a network television debut on Late Night with Seth Meyers · the now 23-year-old Apollo has transitioned from the freeform D.I.Y. creativity of those beloved earlier records towards a more focused development of his sound. He’s making deeper connections between his music and his Latin roots while laboring over each song in ways he never would’ve before. Part redefinition · part enhancement · the autobiographical new material he’s been working on for his upcoming projects promises to bring him to another level in his career. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Baldwin and Buckley at Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:In 1965 James Baldwin and William F. Buckley\, Jr. were invited to The Cambridge University Union to debate the resolution “The American Dream is at the Expense of The American Negro.” The result was a provocative and profoundly relevant confrontation between Baldwin\, one of the most powerful figures of the civil rights movement\, and Buckley\, often considered the father of 20th Century patrician conservatism. Building on its history of staging unconventional texts\, New York-based ensemble Elevator Repair Service (ERS) will present the debate verbatim in a special video preview of this new work. As a more intimate and personal counterpoint to the debate\, the final scene features a brief\, imagined reunion between Baldwin and his close friend and confidante Lorraine Hansberry\, who died only weeks before the debate. \nThe piece was conceived in late 2019 by long-time ERS company member Greig Sargeant. In the many months since those early conversations\, the subject of the debate has only become more urgent. With both 1965 and 2021 in mind\, Baldwin and Buckley at Cambridge – through a starkly simple design and an acting style that favors intimacy over impersonation – presents the debate as real\, immediate\, and of this moment. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Dayglow
DESCRIPTION:Sloan Struble\, also known professionally as Dayglow\, is an indie-pop musician who writes\, produces\, records\, and mixes all of his music himself – in his bedroom no less. In 2019\, he came to prominence after performing at South by Southwest and racking up over 1 million streams on Spotify of his hit single\, “Can I Call You Tonight?”. At just 21 years old\, he released his debut album Fuzzybrain in August 2019 and had a sold-out headlining tour by November. Even though the pandemic canceled his tour\, Dayglow’s career continues to skyrocket with a second album\, Harmony House\, on the way\, and a performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
