SUMMARY:A Conversation With Yo-Yo Ma
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation With Yo-Yo Ma\nJeffrey Brown\, PBS NewsHour Correspondent\, moderator\n\n\n\nPresented by the Purdue Presidential Lecture Series\n\n\n\nPowered by Purdue Convocations\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTANDBY SEATING\n\n\n\nThis event is sold out. If you do not have a free ticket\, a designated standby line will be formed outside Elliott Hall if additional seating becomes available. \nIMPORTANT ENTRY INFO\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT\nPurdue University President Mung Chiang and the Purdue Presidential Lecture Series present the renowned cellist\, recording artist\, and humanitarian leader Yo-Yo Ma in a special engagement moderated by PBS NewsHour correspondent Jeffrey Brown. Through personal anecdotes\, thoughtful inquiry\, and musical interludes\, Yo-Yo Ma explores how culture can help us all seek truth\, build trust and act in service of one another. \n\n\n\nYo-Yo Ma’s multi-faceted career is testament to his belief in culture’s power to generate trust and understanding. Whether performing new or familiar works for cello\, bringing communities together to explore culture’s role in society\, or engaging unexpected musical forms\, Yo-Yo strives to foster connections that stimulate the imagination and reinforce our humanity. Among his many roles\, Yo-Yo is a United Nations Messenger of Peace and the first artist ever appointed to the World Economic Forum’s board of trustees. His discography of more than 120 albums (including 19 Grammy Award winners) ranges from iconic renditions of the Western classical canon to recordings that defy categorization.   \n\n\n\nYo-Yo was born in 1955 to Chinese parents living in Paris. He began to study the cello with his father at age four and three years later moved with his family to New York City\, where he continued his cello studies at the Juilliard School before pursuing a liberal arts education at Harvard. He has received numerous awards\, including the Avery Fisher Prize (1978)\, the National Medal of the Arts (2001)\, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2010)\, Kennedy Center Honors (2011)\, the Polar Music Prize (2012)\, and the Birgit Nilsson Prize (2022). He has performed for nine American presidents\, most recently on the occasion of President Biden’s inauguration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt sounds superhuman\, but it was just the opposite. It was fully human\, perfect and imperfect at the same time\, easy and difficult\, marked by attempt and reward. This is Ma’s skill. He doesn’t make his music something to marvel at. He makes it a gift. Created for you himself. The Denver Post \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJeffrey Brown\, PBS NewsHour Correspondent \nModerator\n\n\n\nJeffrey Brown\, in a career spanning 30 years with PBS’s NewsHour\, has served as co-anchor\, studio moderator\, and field reporter on a wide range of national and international issues around the nation and globe. He has profiled many of the world’s leading writers\, musicians\, actors\, and artists\, and led inquiry into the status of cultural heritage in the United States and abroad.   \n\n\n\n\nPurdue University President Mung Chiang \n“Arts connects and inspires. Purdue is a university in the fullest sense when we welcome distinguished artists to our campus\,” Purdue President Mung Chiang said. “It is particularly exciting to announce the unique Presidential Lecture Series event with Yo-Yo Ma\, a living legend in the world of music and humanity.”

SUMMARY:Peach Pit
DESCRIPTION:Peach Pit\nPresented by Purdue Student Concert Committee\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE SHOW\n\n\nThrough bad breakups\, bouts of loneliness\, existential crises\, and even pandemics\, true friends stick around. Instead of bending and breaking\, their bonds crystallize in the roughest of rough patches. If friendship had a sound\, it would be Peach Pit. The wistful grooves\, glassy guitars\, and sun-kissed melodies feel like they could only be made by musicians who have spent close to a lifetime (or at least half of their lives) together. \n\n\n\nThe Vancouver quartet of Neil Smith (vocals\, guitar)\, Chris Vanderkooy (guitar)\, Peter Wilton (bass)\, and Mikey Pascuzzi (drums)\, trace their union back to high school. During 2016\, they served up the self-titled single\, “Peach Pit”\, eclipsing north of 78 million total streams on Spotify. \n\n\n\nThe group continued to gain traction with their 2017 full-length debut\, Being So Normal. Among many highlights\, “Tommy’s Party” and “Alrighty Aphrodite” both surpassed 79 million Spotify streams as the band graced the bills of festivals such as Shaky Knees Festival\, Bonnaroo\, M3F Festival\, Sea Hear Now Festival\, All Things Go Festival\, Firefly Festival\, and many more. \n\n\n\nIn 2020\, Peach Pit revealed You and Your Friends\, which DIY Mag hailed as “12 tracks of infectious indie-pop gems” while Atwood Magazine described the band as being “at the cutting edge of the alternative music scene.” Carrying this momentum into late 2021\, they kicked off the next chapter of the band and their friendship with the single “Up Granville.”. \n\n\n\nTo kick off 2022\, the band released two singles entitled “Vickie” and “Look Out!” off of their highly anticipated new album From 2 to 3. The album was released in March 2022 with focus track “Give Up Baby Go.” The band is in the midst of a completely sold out run of dates in the US and will be heading back into the studio in 2023. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVISIT ARTIST WEBSITE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHIS PERFORMANCE POWERED BY:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nADDITIONAL SUPPORT FROM:

The group performs original and evocative chamber music compositions\, led by violinist and founder David Harrington. Over the years\, Kronos has performed more than 1\,000 pieces\, played Carnegie Hall and collaborated with the likes of Philip Glass\, Patti Smith and Steve Reich. \n\n\n\nIn their return to Purdue University\, the San Francisco ensemble continues to challenge and reimagine what a string quartet can be on its Five Decades tour. Kronos will perform new commissions\, signature works from its vast repertoire\, and pieces from its free-access commissioning project\, Kronos Fifty for the Future. The goal: to interpret Shakespeare’s text as a blueprint for a performance — and as a gateway to its wide-ranging\, transformative poetry. \n\n\n\nHere\, the Actors present A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, the cherished mythological comedy set in ancient Greece. Pulling from jazz\, soul\, and funk\, Benjamin’s music soars live and on record. She was part of the Monterey on Tour show with revered jazz vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling\, which included a concert at the Lincoln Center. \n\n\n\nThe charismatic Benjamin routinely engages her audiences on the mic and she is usually the most stylish in the venue. A recent concert in Germany saw her dressed in gold from head to toe\, matching her trusted sax. This multi-media adventure mixes performance and storytelling with projected illustrations to tell the story of Buck\, the magnificent offspring of a St. Bernard and Scottish Collie. \n\n\n\nKidnapped from his lavish life on a California estate and sent to work as a sled dog during the great Klondike Gold Rush of the 1800s\, Buck becomes the most famous dog in the northland’s history and discovers the endurance and strength of his wild\, primal ancestors as their call courses through his blood. A thrilling tale of courage and survival. \n\n\n\nThe production uses 180-degree projection that surrounds the performer and provides scenic\, artistic\, and historical context to the show through their content. DESCRIPTION:Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Live in Concert\n\nBUY TICKETSPICK5+SAVE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE SHOW\n\n\nFeaturing a soundtrack that blends symphonic orchestral music with hip-hop\, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Live in Concert pairs a screening of the Academy Award® winning animated film with a full orchestra\, band\, and turntables live on stage. \n\n\n\nAcademy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning composer Daniel Pemberton created a sprawling score of original music that is complemented with song contributions by Post Malone\, Lil Wayne\, Jaden Smith\, and Nicki Minaj. The hip-hop based score results in a sonic universe that is woven throughout the fabric of the film\, supporting its themes of resilience and universal heroism. The Broadway Sinfonietta\, an all-women and majority women-of-color orchestra will perform the music live with DJ Damage on turntables. \n\n\n\nSpider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales\, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse\, where more than one can wear the mask. A superhero classic for a new generation\, Miles is an Afro-Latinx teen who is bitten by a radioactive spider in the subway and gains mysterious powers. Joined by spider-heroes from parallel universes\, Miles must master his new powers to save his city from a villain who could destroy it all. \nVISIT TOUR WEBSITE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of my favorite scores I’ve ever written\, so I am ridiculously excited we get to perform the world’s very first Spider-Verse concert.
