SUMMARY:Counterpoint
DESCRIPTION:Counterpoint\nCONRAD TAO\, PIANO\n\n\n\nCALEB TEICHER\, TAP\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETSDIGITAL PROGRAM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE SHOW\n\n\nThe unique duo of classical pianist Conrad Tao and dancer/choreographer Caleb Teicher bring their new sonic and visual take on masterworks of Bach\, Mozart\, Brahms\, and Gershwin to Loeb Playhouse this February. \n\n\n\nBlending Tao’s idiosyncratic harmonic mastery with Teicher’s contemporary and percussive tap dancing\, Counterpoint threads together stylistically varied\, landmark pieces into one cohesive thought. Audiences can expect these to include Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations\, Arnold Schoenberg’s Five Piano Pieces\, and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue\, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2024. Tao and Teicher’s earlier work\, More Forever\, is a Bessie Award-winning\, New York Times critic’s pick\, where it was praised for “constantly extending the sonic aspects of dance.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne’s a tap prodigy. For nearly 20 years\, Circa has been stunning audiences with jaw-dropping acrobatics. In Circa’s new show\, Humans 2.0\, performers climb and catch each other during a series of stunts that must be seen to be believed. \n\n\n\nThis performance is a tightly woven choreography of bodies by Circa founder Yaron Lifschitz\, pulsing with music by composer Ori Lichtik and revealed in Paul Jackson’s dramatic lighting. Physical limits are pushed to the extreme. Gravity is defied. Don’t miss the show that Australian media have called “spellbinding physical drama” and “a seriously sensational spectacle.”Humans 2.0 is commissioned by The Mondavi Center\, UC Davis.Circa acknowledges the assistance of the Australian Government through the Australia Council\, its arts funding and advisory body and the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.  \n\n\n\nPhoto: Yaya Stempler \nVISIT CIRCA WEBSITE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn interview with Yaron Lifschitz\, Artistic Director of Circa\nRenee Murray\, Senior Lecturer in the Division of Dance in the Rueff School of Design\, Art and Performance at Purdue University\, chats with Yaron Lifschitz\, Artistic Director of Circa\, about his work with dance\, physical theatre and circus arts. \nWATCH INTERVIEW\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPushes the boundaries of what circus and acrobatics can be. In the last decade\, artists like Lil Buck have promoted the city’s signature steps — dubbed Memphis Jookin’. In Memphis Jookin’: The Show\, Buck choreographed a showcase of the dance style\, known for its ankle-bending\, gravity-defying\, smooth footwork. He performs alongside 10 highly skilled dancers and a DJ to a soundtrack that evokes the energy of the streets\, hallways\, and clubs where the style was born. Buck first turned heads during his interpretative performance of “The Dying Swan\,” accompanied by Yo-Yo Ma\, and a memorable spot in Madonna’s 2012 Super Bowl halftime show — and has now taken Memphis Jookin’ all the way to the Kennedy Center. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW SPONSORS

SUMMARY:Dökk - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: October 26\, 2021\n\n\n\nDökk\, by the Milan\, Italy-based company\, fuse*\, was scheduled to perform in Loeb Playhouse on February 3\, 2022. Due to COVID-19 related complications\, the U.S. tour has been cancelled.  While the Convocations team is currently working to reschedule the performance for a future date\, all tickets purchased for the performance will be refunded automatically. \n\n\n\nIf you purchased with a credit card\, the credit should appear on your billing statement within the next 7-10 business days. Any payments made by cash or check will be refunded via university check and mailed to the current address on file within the next 30 days.  Call (765) 494-3933 for more information. \n\n\n\nWhat if data were a dance partner? Dökk is a daring\, dynamic journey into the subconscious\, the latest expression of artistry through emerging digital technology from Italy’s fuse*. This data mashup is vividly visualized through a stunning 3D projection environment. As these data sources shift and change\, each performance of Dökk becomes one-of-a-kind—evoking life’s own random\, unforeseeable whims. Hailed by The New York Times as “a pacesetter with a difference\,” GMDC explores China’s modern identity\, cultural history and social perspectives through contemporary dance. GMDC’s Beyond Calligraphy is a two-episode work channeling the flowing\, detailed grace of Chinese calligraphy as both inspiration and point of departure for dialogue about ancient and modern culture. It’s a performance The Washington Post described as “full of meditative grace (and) sharp\, cut-crystal physicality.” \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 7PM | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin Guangdong Modern Dance Company’s choreographer\, Mrs. LIU Qi\, for a discussion about the evening’s performance. \n  \nPurdue University and Purdue Convocations are actively monitoring the outbreak of respiratory illnesses caused by the novel coronavirus first identified in Wuhan\, Hubei Province\, China.
