SUMMARY:Scott Silven's The Journey
DESCRIPTION:EXCLUSIVE LIMITED ENGAGEMENT!\n\n\n\nHear a long-forgotten story\, reveal the mysteries of your own mind\, and unlock the secrets of Silven’s homeland through extraordinary illusions and feats of imagination. \n\n\n\nThe Journey marks a return to Purdue for Scott Silven\, the mercurial and mind-blowing Scottish artist who dazzled audiences at Purdue in February of 2018 with the exclusive limited engagement\, At The Illusionist’s Table\, which was presented at the John Purdue Room in Marriott Hall. And our audiences weren’t alone\, as Illusionist’s Table toured worldwide to critical acclaim. \n\n\n\nNow\, with a maximum of 30 participants per show\, this remarkable interactive experience explores your own sense of home\, connection and the power of place to transform us. Join others across the world for a virtual experience like no other\, interact directly with Silven\, and help shape the evening’s mesmerizing events. \n\n\n\nDiscover the path that connects you to Silven’s past\, your own present\, and a collective future. The Journey awaits. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTHE SHOW’S ORIGINS\n\n\n\nWhen Silven returned to his home in rural Scotland\, coming off the heels of a sold-out\, highly-acclaimed world tour\, he found himself in a place from his childhood that was\, all at once\, unfamiliar. Thinking about concepts of home\, place\, and connection\, Silven created a digital experience to explore this current moment of isolation and how it can positively affect our future. \n\n\n\nFor The Journey’s world premiere season\, Silven teamed up with an award-winning creative team including Broadway and West End award-winning veterans Jeff Sugg (visuals) and Gareth Fry (sound)\, Tony winner for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The Journey is directed by Allie Winton Butler\, one of Scotland’s leading creative talents. It is written by Silven and Rob Drummond. The creative producer is Michael Mushalla. Music is an original score composed by Jherek Bischoff. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nABOUT SCOTT SILVEN\n\n\n\nScott Silven who pushes the boundaries of his craft by creating stylish\, smart\, and uniquely immersive performances for stage\, screen and now in the digital realm\, has mesmerized audiences across the globe for more than a decade.  He is a modern-day marvel like no other. \n\n\n\nHailed by Vogue as a ‘world-renowned mentalist’\, his work has been described as ‘a marvel’ (The New York Times)\, ‘mesmerizing’ (Town and Country) ‘truly astonishing’ (The Daily Beast) ’unforgettable’ (Entertainment Weekly) and theatre that ‘wows everyone’ (The New Yorker) through a combination of ‘elegance\, sheer mind power\, and profound philosophical insight’ (Manhattan Digest). The Journey follows previous shows including two major sold-out runs in New York and an extensive tour on the international stage including headline engagements with leading arts organizations including the Melbourne International Arts Festival\, Sydney Festival\, Stanford Live\, Luminato Festival\, Seattle Theater Group\, and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. \n\n\n\nAs a child\, Silven reveled in mystery. His innate fascination with the enigmatic and unexplainable guided him to the craft of illusion at a young age and evoked a sense of wonder that he knew he had to share with others. From stage to screen\, Silven’s objectives remain absolute: to orchestrate an awe-inspiring experience\, to reveal the mysterious side of human nature\, and\, ultimately\, to lead his audiences to a place that suggests untold possibilities\, a place that challenges perceptions; a place that allows them to look at the work\, and themselves\, in an extraordinary way. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSupport from \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease Note: Before The Journey begins\, you will receive prompts via email in advance of the production. These prompts and your responses will help inform the evening’s events. SUMMARY:West Lafayette Global Fest Care Package
DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, Purdue Convocations joined the organizing committee for the long-running Global Fest presented by the City of West Lafayette/WL Parks & Recreation\, alongside the International Center of West Lafayette\, and a huge cadre of committed volunteers. Since that time\, Global Fest has grown into a premiere street festival that simultaneously celebrates the diverse cultures that comprise our community and articulates our welcome to those that live and study here\, all alongside an accompanying federal Naturalization & Immigration Ceremony. After the success of the 2019 event\, which included additional performance stages\, world-class talent\, the new International Night Market\, and lots of sunshine\, we had big plans for the 2020 Global Fest–which would have been our 25th anniversary. \nOf course\, hosting a large-scale street festival with music\, food and culture is not possible this fall\, but we know that our community’s commitment to the festival and the ideals it animates has not diminished at all. In fact\, it’s quite the opposite. To answer that call\, the Global Fest team has worked hard to design a new solution just for you: The West Lafayette Global Fest Care Package brings the spirit of Global Fest directly to your home. And importantly\, by celebrating this amazing program\, you’ll also support the return and growth of Global Fest in the future. \nWe choose to celebrate the unity in community.  We all #BelongHere. \nThe West Lafayette Global Fest Care Package will include: \n\nA colorful\, reusable tote bag (show your support wherever you shop!)\nA compelling Global Fest yard sign supporting our community ideals: #BelongHere\nA civics lesson guidebook that reviews the important civics facts\, lessons and frameworks involved in becoming a naturalized citizen.\nMusic download links featuring music from specially-curated global artists\n\nOrder your care package while supplies last or until December 31.

SUMMARY:DÖKK by fuse*
DESCRIPTION:“An unexpected synesthesia of pure cognitive escape” –Exibart \nWhat if data were a dance partner? Dökk is a daring\, dynamic journey into the subconscious\, the latest expression of artistry through emerging digital technology from Italy’s fuse*. Named after the Icelandic word for “darkness\,” Dökk uses software to synthesize real-time data from four simultaneous sources: Dökk’s musical score; the movement of performer / choreographer Elena Annovi; her heartbeat; and emotional analysis of social media trends at that very moment. This data mashup is vividly visualized through a stunning 3D projection environment. As each data source shifts\, each performance of Dökk becomes one-of-a-kind—evoking life’s own random\, unforeseeable whims. Both experimental and empirical\, Dökk illuminates invisible connections among us all in an intimate\, immersive fusion of light\, sound\, space and movement. \nThis engagement with fuse* is a continuation of Purdue Convocations’ Innovator-In-Residence platform—a forum for the investigation of new works that examine\, question and propose ideas in the fluid nexus where humanity and technology intersect. This production further extends the discussion of real-time interactivity from our previous engagement in this series\, the AI-driven musical improvisation of Shimon Robot and Friends. \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 6:30PM | STEWART CENTER 279\nJoin a member of fuse* for a discussion about the evening’s performance.

Inspired by a children’s book and Oscar®-nominated film\, this film-with-live-soundtrack journey follows a Canadian boy who carves a wooden figure and sets it on an epic journey across lakes\, rivers and\, eventually\, the Atlantic Ocean. Accompanying the film live\, Third Coast interweaves original compositions with water-inspired works from Philip Glass\, Jacob Druckman and Zimbabwe’s Shona people. Drawing on water’s own dynamics\, Paddle is alternately spirited and serene—letting audiences consider mankind’s impact on waterways while contemplating their exuberant majesty and infinite possibility. \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 7PM | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin ethnomusicologist and percussionist Dr. Nolan Warden for discussion about the evening’s performance.

SUMMARY:Walk On: The Story of Rosa Parks
DESCRIPTION:You could feel tremors rumbling across America as rock ‘n’ roll excited kids and outraged parents. But an even more important transformation awaited in Montgomery\, Alabama as Rosa Parks\, an African-American woman\, refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger. Her protest ignited America’s Civil Rights movement and forever changed our nation. Through music and drama\, this production from Mad River Theater Works—which dramatized the Freedom Riders’ story at Purdue in 2017—recounts Parks’ life while dispelling reductive myths about her protest to paint a complex\, comprehensive portrait of her Civil Rights leadership. Exciting and inspirational\, Walk On: The Story of Rosa Parks shows how individual determination makes a difference in freedom and equality for all. \nPRE-SHOW ACTIVITIES | 2PM | STEWART CENTER LOBBY\nJoin the Purdue Black Cultural Center and the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana for pre-show activities.

SUMMARY:The Brother Brothers
DESCRIPTION:“Intimate acoustic fold anchored by butter-smooth close-harmony vocals and minimalist-yet-sophisticated arrangements.” – Rolling Stone \nEveryday elation and frustration always sounds sweeter with the sublime vocals\, skillful strumming\, and stunning songcraft of the Brothers Brothers. Opening for the I’m With Her tour at Purdue in 2018\, identical twins David and Adam Moss immediately won the crowd over with two-part harmonies evocative of Simon & Garfunkel and a fraternal stage presence. From dark-alley desolation (“The Gambler”) to the lighthearted but lonely (“Banjo Song”) and lamentory ballads (“Angel Island\,” “Frankie”)\, the Brothers Brothers care about the things people know and the world they’re making. Rolling Stone called them one of 10 new country artists you need to know\, and Convocations is honored to welcome them as Outreach Artists-in-Residence—inspiring our students and community with free performances in unexpected places.  \nPerformances \nThurs\, 2/27\n3:00pm – Purdue Memorial Union Main Lounge\n6:30pm – Greyhouse Coffee Ristretto Room\n\nFri\, 2/28\n12:00PM – Matchbox Co-Working Studios\n7:00pm – Wells Cultural Center Building

SUMMARY:Guangdong Modern Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:LIU QI Choreography \nGuangdong Province is a bridge to inland China\, a gateway through which the world saw China “open up” during economic reforms and one of the nation’s fastest-growing regions. It’s also a thriving hub of modern-dance movement\, education and opportunity\, led by the 1992 inception of the Guangdong Modern Dance Company as China’s first modern-dance ensemble. Hailed by The New York Times as “a pacesetter with a difference\,” GMDC explores China’s modern identity\, cultural history and social perspectives through contemporary dance. GMDC’s Beyond Calligraphy is a two-episode work channeling the flowing\, detailed grace of Chinese calligraphy as both inspiration and point of departure for dialogue about ancient and modern culture. SUMMARY:Neyla Pekarek
DESCRIPTION:Cellist / vocalist Neyla Pekarek—formerly of the Grammy®️-nominated indie-folk band the Lumineers—certainly chose a compelling muse for her 2019 solo debut\, Rattlesnake. While on horseback with her son in 1925\, Kate Slaughterback confronted a sudden\, terrifying advance of rattlesnakes. First\, she used her gun to fend them off. When the bullets ran out? She fashioned a makeshift club. After two hours\, 140 snakes were dead and the Rattlesnake Kate legend was forged. Pekarek envisions Kate’s life surrounding this incident through a rollicking\, expansive song cycle of Americana\, blues\, ’60s pop\, Tin Pan Alley and doo-wop. From Kate’s story\, Pekarek has created a cathartic battle cry about asserting identity\, refusing to capitulate and defying expectations. Sometimes you need to show them all the poison you possess inside.

Hailing from America\, Canada\, Israel\, Chile and Japan\, the sextet features Renee Rosnes (piano / musical director)\, Ingrid Jensen (trumpet)\, Anat Cohen (clarinet)\, Noriko Ueda (bass)\, Allison Miller (drums) and tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana\, the latter of whom Convocations presented to sold-out Carnahan Hall crowds in 2014. Regularly leading their own bands\, the artists of Artemis gather their genius for selections spanning Thelonious Monk to the Beatles—presented with passion\, power and sensitivity. This performance represents Convocations’ kick-off contribution to the 30th annual Purdue Jazz Festival\, a Purdue University Bands event bringing more than 2\,500 middle- and high-school students to campus for clinics and concerts. \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 7PM | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin composer\, jazz pianist and music educator Dr. Judd Danby for a pre-show discussion.

SUMMARY:Nassim
DESCRIPTION:“A tantalizing theatrical provocation that breaks down all walls between stage and audience.”  –The Stage \nA sealed envelope. A new actor every night. Perhaps some unexpected guests. No rehearsals. Numerous surprises. Hailed by The New York Times as “an affectionate play about friendship\,” Nassim is Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour’s latest audacious theatrical experiment\, which premiered in Edinburgh in 2017 and has since played to sold-out audiences worldwide. It’s Soleimanpour’s follow-up to White Rabbit Red Rabbit\, a one-performer mystery unspooled by an array of A-listers such as Nathan Lane\, Whoopi Goldberg\, Cynthia Nixon and Darren Criss. Nassim explores how language\, humanity and culture unite people during uncertain times. No two friendships are the same. Neither are any two nights of Nassim—an exhilarating\, playful and soulful work about how an open mind for spontaneity and camaraderie keeps us human. \nPERFORMANCES \nNov. 19 at 7:30PM (featuring Jason Wallace)\nNov. 20 at 7:30PM (featuring Julie Doan-Baumann)\nNov. 21 at 7:30PM (featuring Bryan Montemayor)\nNov. 22 at 7PM (featuring Rachel Wallace) & 9:30PM (9:30 performance has been cancelled)\nNov. 23 at 4PM (featuring Kristie Schuh) & 8PM (featuring Craig Martin) \nPurdue Convocations is pleased to present Nassim in the intimate confines of the Historic Monon Depot Theatre thanks to a special partnership with our friends at the Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette. SUMMARY:Novalima
DESCRIPTION:Blending electronica beats with traditional instruments and tempos of Afro-Peruvian folk\, Novalima conjures the soundtrack to both contemporary midnight mysteries and cultures that have endured for hundreds of years. Formed by four friends from Lima\, Peru after their emergence from the city’s punk and psychedelic scenes\, Novalima reckons with the nation’s legacy of slavery through music. Their work merges three centuries’ worth of sound into a creative confection NPR likened to “a three-layer cake of time.” Here\, the paths of computer samples and percussive cajon slaps intersect in sleek\, sonically seductive grooves that incorporate aspects of reggae\, dub\, salsa\, hip-hop\, afrobeat and pan-Latin inflection. No matter the style\, Novalima understands that cultural divisions easily drop away on the common ground of a crowded dance floor.

SUMMARY:Yi-Nuo Wang\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Purdue Convocations has long been honored to present classical artists as their careers accelerate under auspices of the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition. Fresh from her first-place finish in 2018\, Chinese pianist Yi-Nuo Wang continues that tradition\, as well as the continued animation of Convocations’ exploration of piano repertoire on a Steinway Concert Grand Piano gifted by Janet and John Nine. Wang began playing at age 4 in Beijing\, won her first competition at age 5 and studied at Beijing’s prestigious Central Conservatory of Music. Now an active performer alongside ensembles in Asia\, Europe and the United States\, Wang lives in New York—where she is pursuing her undergraduate degree at The Juilliard School and making her New York recital debut this season at Carnegie Hall.

This action-packed tale includes dozens of characters—from German scientists\, Russian cosmonauts and American astronauts (including plenty of Purdue’s own) to JFK and Walter Cronkite—all played by two extraordinary actors. Surrounded by vintage electronics and flea-market finds\, they deliver inventive visual theatre as comically low-tech as Apollo 11 was high-tech—all while celebrating mankind’s unbridled creativity. SUMMARY:1984
DESCRIPTION:For 70 years\, George Orwell’s uneasily prescient novel 1984 has both unmoored readers from recognizable reality and helped them ruminate on the society they see. An influential\, evocative work of fiction that’s timeless and timely\, 1984 finds everyman Winston Smith unexpectedly challenging a world in which totalitarian government reigns supreme\, technology is a weapon of propaganda and control\, and Big Brother is always watching. It’s a story suited to the bold\, ensemble-driven physicality of Aquila Theatre\, which will stage a ferocious\, provocative and critically praised adaptation of Orwell’s work from award-winning playwright Michael Gene Sullivan. As does the novel\, the Aquila Theatre’s production forces its audience to consider: How far are we from Orwell’s dystopian nightmare…or in what ways are we already there? \nPERFORMANCES \nOct. 16 at 7:30PM\nOct. 17 at 7:30PM \nPurdue Convocations is pleased to welcome back Aquila Theatre Company after its successful run of Frankenstein at Purdue University in October 2018. \nPRE-SHOW DISCUSSION | 6:30PM | BOTH NIGHTS | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin Dr. Swati Srivastava\, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science\, for a discussion about the evening’s performance.
