SUMMARY:Live from Emmet's Place
DESCRIPTION:Since March of 2020\, the rising star Cohen\, who is the current American Pianists Association’s (APA) Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz\, has been holding forth every Monday night with his Live From Emmet’s Place webcast featuring his long-time bandmates Russell Hall (bass) and Kyle Poole (drums). What started as a one-off livestream from that very apartment in Harlem has now become a weekly phenomenon with a roster of A-list guest artists and a global audience numbering in the thousands. Cohen is no stranger to Indiana thanks to his connection to the APA and his April 2019 performance at Convocations in support of vocalist Veronica Swift. Now with his new Mack Avenue Records release\, Future Stride\, hitting the airwaves\, Convos has teamed up with Cohen to support his work and bring it to Convos audiences live every week. \nPurdue Convocations\, with the support of the Piano Giving Circle and Robert & Patricia Peyton Truitt have provided support for the Live From Emmet’s Place webcast\, the guest artists\, and the entire team it takes to produce the weekly show for the months of February\, March\, and April\, 2021. \nAdmission FREE/no tickets required (but tipping the working artists via the virtual tip-jar will undoubtedly warm your heart) \nWatch Live from Emmet’s Place on his Facebook page and YouTube channel. \n

SUMMARY:Baldwin and Buckley at Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:In 1965 James Baldwin and William F. Buckley\, Jr. were invited to The Cambridge University Union to debate the resolution “The American Dream is at the Expense of The American Negro.” The result was a provocative and profoundly relevant confrontation between Baldwin\, one of the most powerful figures of the civil rights movement\, and Buckley\, often considered the father of 20th Century patrician conservatism. Building on its history of staging unconventional texts\, New York-based ensemble Elevator Repair Service (ERS) will present the debate verbatim in a special video preview of this new work. As a more intimate and personal counterpoint to the debate\, the final scene features a brief\, imagined reunion between Baldwin and his close friend and confidante Lorraine Hansberry\, who died only weeks before the debate. \nThe piece was conceived in late 2019 by long-time ERS company member Greig Sargeant. In the many months since those early conversations\, the subject of the debate has only become more urgent. With both 1965 and 2021 in mind\, Baldwin and Buckley at Cambridge – through a starkly simple design and an acting style that favors intimacy over impersonation – presents the debate as real\, immediate\, and of this moment. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:St. Lawrence String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Franz Josef Haydn (1732-1809) is rightfully acknowledged as the “father” of the string quartet. He conceived the ensemble and the musical approach in a way that still serves as both a foundation and a point of departure today. And yet\, Haydn is too often regarded as an opening act; pleasant appetizer music before the main course of a concert program. The St. Lawrence String Quartet\, the current ensemble-in-residence at Stanford University\, proposes a fresh look at that musical menu. In The Haydn Discovery Experience\, first violinist Geoff Nuttall and his ensemble colleagues will reveal Haydn’s genius in an active-listening journey filled with history and musical insights focused on the Quartet in G minor\, Opus 20\, No. 3 that will prepare you for a close listen to a performance that was beautifully captured at Stanford’s Bing Hall. This special engagement serves as their third “visit” to Purdue\, and comes directly on the heels of their 30th anniversary season and the release of their new “in-your-face exhilarating” (Los Angeles Times) recording featuring all six of the Haydn Opus 20 quartets. \nCLICK FOR PROGRAM NOTES\nProgram\nString Quartet in G minor\, Op.20\, No.3 (1772)\nAllegro con spirito\nMenuetto: Allegretto\nPoco Adagio\n Allegro di molto \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ran Dank & Soyeon Kate Lee
DESCRIPTION:With “a huge\, richly varied sound\, a lively imagination and a firm sense of style” (The New York Times)\, the prize-winning pianists and spouses Ran Dank and Soyeon Kate Lee\, will tackle Franz Liszt’s towering–and fiendishly difficult–transcription of Beethoven’s final orchestral masterpiece\, the Symphony No. 9 in D minor in a special virtual presentation. As if the demands that Beethoven placed on the orchestra in this work weren’t enough\, the imaginative transformation envisioned by Liszt throws down the pianistic gauntlet still further to create the dramatic colors and textures of the orchestra\, and yes\, that cathartic lift of magnificence: The Ode to Joy chorale. \nOur April 2020 engagement with the Dank & Lee was cancelled due to COVID\, but this hybrid engagement brings the duo back to our community featuring a live introduction with Dank & Lee in which they’ll introduce the work and its themes\, examine the orchestral and pianistic challenges\, and share their perspectives on performing the masterwork. Then\, by special arrangement with the Library of Congress\, Convocations will rebroadcast Dank & Lee’s exceptional performance from December 2020. This is a perfect way to honor Beethoven’s 250th birthday celebration season. \n  \n

And our audiences weren’t alone\, as Illusionist’s Table toured worldwide to critical acclaim. \n\n\n\nNow\, with a maximum of 30 participants per show\, this remarkable interactive experience explores your own sense of home\, connection and the power of place to transform us. Join others across the world for a virtual experience like no other\, interact directly with Silven\, and help shape the evening’s mesmerizing events. \n\n\n\nDiscover the path that connects you to Silven’s past\, your own present\, and a collective future. The Journey awaits. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTHE SHOW’S ORIGINS\n\n\n\nWhen Silven returned to his home in rural Scotland\, coming off the heels of a sold-out\, highly-acclaimed world tour\, he found himself in a place from his childhood that was\, all at once\, unfamiliar. Thinking about concepts of home\, place\, and connection\, Silven created a digital experience to explore this current moment of isolation and how it can positively affect our future. \n\n\n\nFor The Journey’s world premiere season\, Silven teamed up with an award-winning creative team including Broadway and West End award-winning veterans Jeff Sugg (visuals) and Gareth Fry (sound)\, Tony winner for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The Journey is directed by Allie Winton Butler\, one of Scotland’s leading creative talents. It is written by Silven and Rob Drummond. The creative producer is Michael Mushalla. Music is an original score composed by Jherek Bischoff. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nABOUT SCOTT SILVEN\n\n\n\nScott Silven who pushes the boundaries of his craft by creating stylish\, smart\, and uniquely immersive performances for stage\, screen and now in the digital realm\, has mesmerized audiences across the globe for more than a decade.  He is a modern-day marvel like no other. \n\n\n\nHailed by Vogue as a ‘world-renowned mentalist’\, his work has been described as ‘a marvel’ (The New York Times)\, ‘mesmerizing’ (Town and Country) ‘truly astonishing’ (The Daily Beast) ’unforgettable’ (Entertainment Weekly) and theatre that ‘wows everyone’ (The New Yorker) through a combination of ‘elegance\, sheer mind power\, and profound philosophical insight’ (Manhattan Digest). The Journey follows previous shows including two major sold-out runs in New York and an extensive tour on the international stage including headline engagements with leading arts organizations including the Melbourne International Arts Festival\, Sydney Festival\, Stanford Live\, Luminato Festival\, Seattle Theater Group\, and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. \n\n\n\nAs a child\, Silven reveled in mystery. His innate fascination with the enigmatic and unexplainable guided him to the craft of illusion at a young age and evoked a sense of wonder that he knew he had to share with others. From stage to screen\, Silven’s objectives remain absolute: to orchestrate an awe-inspiring experience\, to reveal the mysterious side of human nature\, and\, ultimately\, to lead his audiences to a place that suggests untold possibilities\, a place that challenges perceptions; a place that allows them to look at the work\, and themselves\, in an extraordinary way. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSupport from \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease Note: Before The Journey begins\, you will receive prompts via email in advance of the production. These prompts and your responses will help inform the evening’s events. Be on the lookout for those prompts at the email address you provide. SUMMARY:West Lafayette Global Fest Care Package
DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, Purdue Convocations joined the organizing committee for the long-running Global Fest presented by the City of West Lafayette/WL Parks & Recreation\, alongside the International Center of West Lafayette\, and a huge cadre of committed volunteers. Since that time\, Global Fest has grown into a premiere street festival that simultaneously celebrates the diverse cultures that comprise our community and articulates our welcome to those that live and study here\, all alongside an accompanying federal Naturalization & Immigration Ceremony. After the success of the 2019 event\, which included additional performance stages\, world-class talent\, the new International Night Market\, and lots of sunshine\, we had big plans for the 2020 Global Fest–which would have been our 25th anniversary. \nOf course\, hosting a large-scale street festival with music\, food and culture is not possible this fall\, but we know that our community’s commitment to the festival and the ideals it animates has not diminished at all. In fact\, it’s quite the opposite. To answer that call\, the Global Fest team has worked hard to design a new solution just for you: The West Lafayette Global Fest Care Package brings the spirit of Global Fest directly to your home. And importantly\, by celebrating this amazing program\, you’ll also support the return and growth of Global Fest in the future. \nWe choose to celebrate the unity in community.  We all #BelongHere. \nThe West Lafayette Global Fest Care Package will include: \n\nA colorful\, reusable tote bag (show your support wherever you shop!)\nA compelling Global Fest yard sign supporting our community ideals: #BelongHere\nA civics lesson guidebook that reviews the important civics facts\, lessons and frameworks involved in becoming a naturalized citizen.\nMusic download links featuring music from specially-curated global artists\n\nOrder your care package while supplies last or until December 31.
