SUMMARY:Yi-Nuo Wang\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Purdue Convocations has long been honored to present classical artists as their careers accelerate under auspices of the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition. Fresh from her first-place finish in 2018\, Chinese pianist Yi-Nuo Wang continues that tradition\, as well as the continued animation of Convocations’ exploration of piano repertoire on a Steinway Concert Grand Piano gifted by Janet and John Nine. Wang began playing at age 4 in Beijing\, won her first competition at age 5 and studied at Beijing’s prestigious Central Conservatory of Music. Now an active performer alongside ensembles in Asia\, Europe and the United States\, Wang lives in New York—where she is pursuing her undergraduate degree at The Juilliard School and making her New York recital debut this season at Carnegie Hall.

SUMMARY:Camille Thomas\, cello
DESCRIPTION:“Camille Thomas…has all the requisite technique and produces a sound I can only liken to drinking hot chocolate: delicious\, warming\, full of flavour.” — Gramophone Magazine \nFrom nature’s unpredictable whims to impeccable human craftsmanship\, the creation of a fine wine and a timeless cello have much in common. When the alchemy is just right\, the results are warm\, vibrant\, life-affirming. Such are the commanding sounds of Paris-born Camille Thomas\, a rising-star cellist delivering dynamic virtuosity on her 18th-century Gagliano cello\, nicknamed the Château Pape-Clément after Bordeaux’s oldest wine estate. Thomas earned a first-prize finish at 2014’s European Broadcasting Union Competition and a spot on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list. Here\, she’ll let breathe her blend of verve\, intimacy and tenderness on a Brahms sonata with otherworldly overtones\, Beethoven’s variations on music from The Magic Flute\, a movement from Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time\, and a soulful\, radiant Franck cello sonata. \nPROGRAM\nBrahms: Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor\, Op. 38 \nBeethoven: 7 Variations on Bei Männern\, welche Liebe fühlen \nINTERMISSION\nMessiaen: Louange à l’éternité de Jésus \nFranck: Cello Sonata in A Major\, M. 8 \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 6:30PM | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin cellist and executive director of the Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society Margot Marlatt for a discussion about the evening’s performance.

SUMMARY:Big Gigantic
DESCRIPTION:with special guest MadeinTYO\nUPDATE: The Free Fall Concert has been moved to Elliott Hall of Music due to the weather.  \nJoin the Student Concert Committee and the Purdue Student Union Board for a FREE fall concert on Homecoming weekend! \nBig Gigantic established themselves as pioneers of live electronic music with the band’s inception in 2008. Now\, more than 10 years later\, they continue to shape the genre by moving it forward with each new release. The Colorado-based saxophonist/producer Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken\, are veterans of blending electronic dance music with their live instruments to create Big G’s truly unique sound\, that is as thoughtful as it is danceable. Big Gigantic mixes musically mature melodies with addictive beats and samples\, that are familiar to a Kanye West or LCD Soundsystem single\, and crosses all styles of music from jazz to hip hop\, funk to dubstep. \nMadeinTYO has managed to carve out a spot for himself amongst Future\, Young Thug\, and Migos in the crowded Atlanta hip-hop scene. His bass-heavy production is sonically right in line with the street sensibilities of the south but his style is more playful and breezy than most of his contemporaries. \n  \nBrought to you with additional support from Purdue Student Fee Advisory Board\, Purdue 150\, Vice Provost for Student Life and Purdue Athletics.

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Guitar Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“The world’s hottest classical ensemble or its tightest pop band? However it helps you to think about the LAGQ\, keep the emphasis on superlatives for its unrivaled joy\, technical elan and questing spirits.” – Los Angeles Times \nGuitar virtuoso Andrés Segovia likened his instrument to a small orchestra\, “every string a different color\, a different voice.” Since 1980\, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (LAGQ) has embraced that diverse\, adventurous spirit—infusing new vigor into canonical classics while bridging classical\, jazz\, rock and pop in contemporary explorations. For its American Guitar Masters program\, the LAGQ celebrates U.S. guitar innovators\, including selections from Chet Atkins\, Jimi Hendrix\, Frank Zappa\, and Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs\, guitar settings of Sousa and Copland\, chorales and chaconnes\, and the centerpiece “Road to the Sun.” Jazz legend Pat Metheny wrote this melodic\, groove-filled tone poem specifically for the LAGQ\, whom the Los Angeles Times hailed as “one of the wonders of the chamber music scene rooted in the West.” \nPRE-SHOW DISCUSSION | 2PM | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin Los Angeles Guitar Quartet member Bill Kanengiser and composer\, jazz pianist and music educator Dr. Judd Danby for a pre-show discussion.

SUMMARY:Margo Price
DESCRIPTION:“One of the most compelling country talents to come out of Nashville in recent memory” — Vulture \nIn 2015\, Margo Price called it a win if she had enough gas in the tank to make her next gig. By 2016\, she was among country music’s most celebrated new artists. Price’s debut album\, Midwest Farmer’s Daughter\, made numerous top-10 lists; NPR called it “the hard-won arrival of an artist who feels like she’s always been here.” Her 2017 follow-up\, All American Made\, earned widespread acclaim and a 2019 Grammy® nomination for Best New Artist. Price’s voice is a brassy\, sassy clarion call to wry\, weary\, and wise stories of heartache and determination. Fusing Nashville country\, Memphis soul and Texas twang\, she tips her cap to Waylon\, Willie\, Loretta and Dolly while challenging country conventions through brutally honest\, beautifully poetic portraits of everyday life. \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 6:30PM | PMU West Faculty Lounge\nJoin McKenzie Isom\, a  Ph.D. student in the Department of History\, for a discussion about the evening’s performance.
