SUMMARY:The Simon and Garfunkel Story
DESCRIPTION:“For once\, you can believe the hype” – British Theatre Guide\nIf 1960s New York had a playlist\, the unmistakable\, enchanting folk harmonies of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel would make up almost every track. Hits like “Mrs. Robinson\,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Homeward Bound” fueled album sales to the tune of 100 million. And it wasn’t just the Empire State: Your mother or father probably wore out a vinyl copy of Sounds of Silence. Through artful image projection\, rare photos and video\, and a live band performing timeless tunes\, The Simon & Garfunkel Story presents a multimedia experience that culminates with the duo’s 1981 Central Park reunion concert—one of the largest in history with more than a half-million fans singing along. The Simon & Garfunkel Story ensures audiences can do the same 40 years later.\n\n \n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES\n\n

SUMMARY:Joshua Redman Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“Unparalleled among horn players today” – JazzTimes\nWhat began as a brief detour into Brooklyn’s jazz scene for Joshua Redman blossomed into 30 years of ceaseless innovation\, acclaimed recording and passionate performance. Boasting influences that range from John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman to Prince and the Police\, Redman has forged a signature saxophone sound as provocative and forward-looking as it is hard-swinging and soulful. Propelled by bassist Reuben Rogers\, drummer Gregory Hutchinson and pianist Aaron Goldberg\, Redman’s Grammy®-nominated namesake quartet generates a tight and joyous onstage alchemy\, most recently captured on its 2019 album\, Come What May. The quartet’s performance represents Convocations’ kick-off contribution to the 2022 Purdue Jazz Festival\, a Purdue University Bands event that brings more than 2\,500 middle- and high-school students to campus for clinics and concerts. \n\n\n\n \n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES\n\n

DESCRIPTION:A profound way for people to connect and interact. – The New Yorker \nHundreds of voices. Endless song possibilities. One music-making memory you’ll never forget. Choir! Choir! Choir! began in 2011 as a weekly drop-in event in Toronto and has since become a YouTube phenomenon and worldwide sensation\, performing in clubs\, festivals\, Carnegie Hall and even a simultaneous gig joining audiences on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. No auditions required here. The audience is the choir. Simply show up on Slayter Hill and let Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman lead you in performing their original arrangement of a song you know and love. Each of three free performances will feature a different song\, making each performance a unique journey. A joyous erasure of the boundary between artist and audience\, Choir! Choir! SUMMARY:26th Annual West Lafayette Global Fest
DESCRIPTION:West Lafayette’s acclaimed international flavor gets its rightful spotlight back as the 2021 Global Fest returns to street-festival mode with cuisine\, culture and crafts from around the world. A tradition of international celebration\, the West Lafayette Global Fest enjoyed record-setting attendance in 2019\, with global music and dance\, a craft market\, educational workshops\, craft beers and culinary highlights from around the world. All of that is back for 2021 with three main stage performances featuring The Rahim AlHaj Trio playing Iraqi maqams on the oud and santour\, followed by a body moving mixture of contemporary funk and Brazilian forró from Nation Beat\, and a fusion of fiery Bomba with folkloric guaracha and salsa from Los Hacheros. The return of this all-out dancing-in-the-streets party will mark 26 years of Global Fest and serve as a jubilant expression of this global village that is our home. \n\n\n\nIncluded in Purdue Weeks of Welcome—tag your photos! #PurdueWoW \n\n\n\n\n\nMain Stage Performance Schedule\n\n\n\n3:30pm  – gates open \n\n\n\n3:40pm – Boiler Bhangra \n\n\n\n4:00pm – McGovern Irish Dancers \n\n\n\n4:30pm – Purdue Chinese Performing Arts Troupe \n\n\n\n5:30pm – Rahim AlHaj Trio \n\n\n\n7:00pm – Nation Beat \n\n\n\n9:00pm – Los Hacheros \n\n\n\n\n\nPop-up Performances\n\n\n\n4:25pm – Lion/Dragon Parade \n\n\n\n5:15pm – Okinawa Yuyukai \n\n\n\n6:40pm – Okinawa Yuyukai \n\n\n\n6:50pm – Lion/Dragon Parade \n\n\n\n\nGLOBAL FEST PASSPORT GUIDE\n\n\n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional support for Global Fest:\n\n\n\nIndiana Arts Commission | Skillman Corporation | The Veridus Group | West Lafayette Parks and RecreationPurdue University Honors College | Wessler Engineering\, Inc. | Sunbelt Rentals | West Lafayette Public LibraryDeFouw Automotive | MBAH Insurance | Purdue Black Cultural Center | Purdue Latino Cultural Center | Purdue Asian American and Asian Resource Cultural CenterBowen Engineering | Friends of Convocations Endowment

SUMMARY:Mucca Pazza
DESCRIPTION:John Phillip Sousa would not be amused. \nChicago Tribune\n\n\n\nLike any marching band\, you’ll hear Mucca Pazza coming before you see them. That’s where the similarities end. Mucca Pazza’s original genre-bending compositions are inspired by everything from surf rock to Stravinsky. Then there are the brightly colored\, mismatched thrift-shop get-ups\, a squad of absurdist cheerleaders\, and implausible instrumentation that includes electric guitars\, accordions\, violins and even a cello. A darling of Chicago’s underground music scene since 2004\, Mucca Pazza has performed at Lollapalooza\, Lincoln Center\, the Montreal Jazz Fest and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Series. At Purdue\, this merry band of misfits will roam campus\, providing a variety of free pop-up performances at different spaces. Fusing DIY punk aesthetics\, Balkan brass and marching-band maximalism\, Mucca Pazza presents an eminently danceable embrace of the absurd. \n\n\n\n\n\nPerformances Times and Locations\n\n\n\nThursday\, September 9 \n\n\n\n\nKrach Lawn 11:45 AM\nPurdue Bell Tower 1:15 PM\nMemorial Mall 2:30 PM\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, September 10 \n\n\n\n\nPurdue Bell Tower 4:20 PM\nPurdue Arch at Grant and State 5:20 PM\nGreyhouse Coffee plaza (Northwestern and State) 6:20 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES \n\n

SUMMARY:Hand to Hand
DESCRIPTION:…surreal and poetic.” – USA Today \nSquonk Opera’s Hand to Hand is a magnum opus of music\, mischief and marvelous stagecraft. Rigged like a sailing ship and sized like a house\, two giant puppet hands propel this outdoor spectacle alongside a live performance of propulsive progressive rock from Squonk Opera. For 25 years\, these Pittsburgh post-industrialists have fused music\, design\, science and art to bring people face to face in festive ways that The New York Times has called “ingenious\, hallucinatory and hypnotic.” Indeed\, the only things heavy-handed here are the massive mitts\, which audience members can even help manipulate to become part of the fun. This timely\, boisterous extravaganza of comic invention\, fantastic jams and shared experience is a show of hands that’s larger than life. \n\n SUPPORT THIS FREE PERFORMANCE \nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES

SUMMARY:Live from Emmet's Place
DESCRIPTION:Since March of 2020\, the rising star Cohen\, who is the current American Pianists Association’s (APA) Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz\, has been holding forth every Monday night with his Live From Emmet’s Place webcast featuring his long-time bandmates Russell Hall (bass) and Kyle Poole (drums). What started as a one-off livestream from that very apartment in Harlem has now become a weekly phenomenon with a roster of A-list guest artists and a global audience numbering in the thousands. SUMMARY:Omar Apollo
DESCRIPTION:“Apollo’s music stands out in the generosity of his lyrics and the vulnerability of his performance.” – ROLLING STONE \nIn just a few years time · Omar Apollo has gone from teenage strummer to one of the most hotly-tipped R&B artists of his generation. The Indiana-raised Mexican-American singer-songwriter picked up a guitar at the age of 11 and never looked back. His success began when he had 3000 followers on SoundCloud and his friend paid him $30 to upload his music to streaming services. His single “Ugotme” quickly gained traction · and to date has accumulated over 30 million streams in the US across all platforms. \nAfter two back-to-back sold-out headlining tours · memorable festival appearances at Camp Flog Gnaw and Lollapalooza · and a network television debut on Late Night with Seth Meyers · the now 23-year-old Apollo has transitioned from the freeform D.I.Y. creativity of those beloved earlier records towards a more focused development of his sound. He’s making deeper connections between his music and his Latin roots while laboring over each song in ways he never would’ve before. Part redefinition · part enhancement · the autobiographical new material he’s been working on for his upcoming projects promises to bring him to another level in his career. \n  \n

SUMMARY:St. Lawrence String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Franz Josef Haydn (1732-1809) is rightfully acknowledged as the “father” of the string quartet. He conceived the ensemble and the musical approach in a way that still serves as both a foundation and a point of departure today. And yet\, Haydn is too often regarded as an opening act; pleasant appetizer music before the main course of a concert program. The St. Lawrence String Quartet\, the current ensemble-in-residence at Stanford University\, proposes a fresh look at that musical menu. In The Haydn Discovery Experience\, first violinist Geoff Nuttall and his ensemble colleagues will reveal Haydn’s genius in an active-listening journey filled with history and musical insights focused on the Quartet in G minor\, Opus 20\, No. 3 that will prepare you for a close listen to a performance that was beautifully captured at Stanford’s Bing Hall. This special engagement serves as their third “visit” to Purdue\, and comes directly on the heels of their 30th anniversary season and the release of their new “in-your-face exhilarating” (Los Angeles Times) recording featuring all six of the Haydn Opus 20 quartets. \nCLICK FOR PROGRAM NOTES\nProgram\nString Quartet in G minor\, Op.20\, No.3 (1772)\nAllegro con spirito\nMenuetto: Allegretto\nPoco Adagio\n Allegro di molto \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ran Dank & Soyeon Kate Lee
DESCRIPTION:With “a huge\, richly varied sound\, a lively imagination and a firm sense of style” (The New York Times)\, the prize-winning pianists and spouses Ran Dank and Soyeon Kate Lee\, will tackle Franz Liszt’s towering–and fiendishly difficult–transcription of Beethoven’s final orchestral masterpiece\, the Symphony No. 9 in D minor in a special virtual presentation. As if the demands that Beethoven placed on the orchestra in this work weren’t enough\, the imaginative transformation envisioned by Liszt throws down the pianistic gauntlet still further to create the dramatic colors and textures of the orchestra\, and yes\, that cathartic lift of magnificence: The Ode to Joy chorale. \nOur April 2020 engagement with the Dank & Lee was cancelled due to COVID\, but this hybrid engagement brings the duo back to our community featuring a live introduction with Dank & Lee in which they’ll introduce the work and its themes\, examine the orchestral and pianistic challenges\, and share their perspectives on performing the masterwork. Then\, by special arrangement with the Library of Congress\, Convocations will rebroadcast Dank & Lee’s exceptional performance from December 2020. This is a perfect way to honor Beethoven’s 250th birthday celebration season. \n  \n

Inspired by a children’s book and Oscar®-nominated film\, this film-with-live-soundtrack journey follows a Canadian boy who carves a wooden figure and sets it on an epic journey across lakes\, rivers and\, eventually\, the Atlantic Ocean. Accompanying the film live\, Third Coast interweaves original compositions with water-inspired works from Philip Glass\, Jacob Druckman and Zimbabwe’s Shona people. Drawing on water’s own dynamics\, Paddle is alternately spirited and serene—letting audiences consider mankind’s impact on waterways while contemplating their exuberant majesty and infinite possibility. \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 7PM | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin ethnomusicologist and percussionist Dr. Nolan Warden for discussion about the evening’s performance.

SUMMARY:The Brother Brothers
DESCRIPTION:“Intimate acoustic fold anchored by butter-smooth close-harmony vocals and minimalist-yet-sophisticated arrangements.” – Rolling Stone \nEveryday elation and frustration always sounds sweeter with the sublime vocals\, skillful strumming\, and stunning songcraft of the Brothers Brothers. Opening for the I’m With Her tour at Purdue in 2018\, identical twins David and Adam Moss immediately won the crowd over with two-part harmonies evocative of Simon & Garfunkel and a fraternal stage presence. From dark-alley desolation (“The Gambler”) to the lighthearted but lonely (“Banjo Song”) and lamentory ballads (“Angel Island\,” “Frankie”)\, the Brothers Brothers care about the things people know and the world they’re making. Rolling Stone called them one of 10 new country artists you need to know\, and Convocations is honored to welcome them as Outreach Artists-in-Residence—inspiring our students and community with free performances in unexpected places.  \nPerformances \nThurs\, 2/27\n3:00pm – Purdue Memorial Union Main Lounge\n6:30pm – Greyhouse Coffee Ristretto Room\n\nFri\, 2/28\n12:00PM – Matchbox Co-Working Studios\n7:00pm – Wells Cultural Center Building

SUMMARY:Neyla Pekarek
DESCRIPTION:Cellist / vocalist Neyla Pekarek—formerly of the Grammy®️-nominated indie-folk band the Lumineers—certainly chose a compelling muse for her 2019 solo debut\, Rattlesnake. While on horseback with her son in 1925\, Kate Slaughterback confronted a sudden\, terrifying advance of rattlesnakes. First\, she used her gun to fend them off. When the bullets ran out? She fashioned a makeshift club. After two hours\, 140 snakes were dead and the Rattlesnake Kate legend was forged. Pekarek envisions Kate’s life surrounding this incident through a rollicking\, expansive song cycle of Americana\, blues\, ’60s pop\, Tin Pan Alley and doo-wop. From Kate’s story\, Pekarek has created a cathartic battle cry about asserting identity\, refusing to capitulate and defying expectations. Sometimes you need to show them all the poison you possess inside.

SUMMARY:Novalima
DESCRIPTION:Blending electronica beats with traditional instruments and tempos of Afro-Peruvian folk\, Novalima conjures the soundtrack to both contemporary midnight mysteries and cultures that have endured for hundreds of years. Formed by four friends from Lima\, Peru after their emergence from the city’s punk and psychedelic scenes\, Novalima reckons with the nation’s legacy of slavery through music. Their work merges three centuries’ worth of sound into a creative confection NPR likened to “a three-layer cake of time.” Here\, the paths of computer samples and percussive cajon slaps intersect in sleek\, sonically seductive grooves that incorporate aspects of reggae\, dub\, salsa\, hip-hop\, afrobeat and pan-Latin inflection. No matter the style\, Novalima understands that cultural divisions easily drop away on the common ground of a crowded dance floor.

SUMMARY:Yi-Nuo Wang\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Purdue Convocations has long been honored to present classical artists as their careers accelerate under auspices of the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition. Fresh from her first-place finish in 2018\, Chinese pianist Yi-Nuo Wang continues that tradition\, as well as the continued animation of Convocations’ exploration of piano repertoire on a Steinway Concert Grand Piano gifted by Janet and John Nine. Wang began playing at age 4 in Beijing\, won her first competition at age 5 and studied at Beijing’s prestigious Central Conservatory of Music. Now an active performer alongside ensembles in Asia\, Europe and the United States\, Wang lives in New York—where she is pursuing her undergraduate degree at The Juilliard School and making her New York recital debut this season at Carnegie Hall.
