NOW COMING TO PURDUE ON NOV. 4TH! LEARN MORE\n\n\n\nABOUT THE SHOW\n\n\nWho knows what hip-hop would sound like without Grandmaster Flash? A musical pioneer in every sense of the word\, Flash transformed the turntable into an expressive and complex instrument\, and introduced the world to record scratching\, beat juggling\, and breaks. His mastery of these techniques elevated DJ’ing to an art form\, while his legendary parties in the South Bronx became the cradle of hip-hop culture. \n\n\n\nThis audiovisual lecture/demonstration is an educational\, entertaining\, and interactive experience that takes you on a journey with one of the founding fathers of hip-hop. As the architect of the quick mix theory\, Grandmaster Flash will show you how as a teenager\, he used his knowledge of electronic repair to experiment with different styles and techniques and bridge the gap between musical genres—incorporating elements of funk\, soul\, and disco into his mixes. Now\, as we celebrate 50 years of hip-hop\, a whole new generation will experience a once in a lifetime hip-hop history lesson from one of the creators and legends in the genre. \n\n\n\nServing as host and panelist will be Dr. Marlo David\, director of African American Studies and Research Center in Purdue University College of Liberal Arts. Matthew Joseph\, postdoctoral research assistant in belonging\, equity\, and inclusion in Purdue’s John Martinson Honors College\, will serve as a panelist for the event. \nVISIT ARTIST WEBSITE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA party in the Bronx on August 11th\, 1973 is widely considered to be the birthplace of hip-hop. DESCRIPTION:Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Live in Concert\n\nBUY TICKETSPICK5+SAVE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE SHOW\n\n\nFeaturing a soundtrack that blends symphonic orchestral music with hip-hop\, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Live in Concert pairs a screening of the Academy Award® winning animated film with a full orchestra\, band\, and turntables live on stage. \n\n\n\nAcademy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning composer Daniel Pemberton created a sprawling score of original music that is complemented with song contributions by Post Malone\, Lil Wayne\, Jaden Smith\, and Nicki Minaj. The hip-hop based score results in a sonic universe that is woven throughout the fabric of the film\, supporting its themes of resilience and universal heroism. The Broadway Sinfonietta\, an all-women and majority women-of-color orchestra will perform the music live with DJ Damage on turntables. \n\n\n\nSpider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales\, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse\, where more than one can wear the mask. A superhero classic for a new generation\, Miles is an Afro-Latinx teen who is bitten by a radioactive spider in the subway and gains mysterious powers. Joined by spider-heroes from parallel universes\, Miles must master his new powers to save his city from a villain who could destroy it all. \nVISIT TOUR WEBSITE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of my favorite scores I’ve ever written\, so I am ridiculously excited we get to perform the world’s very first Spider-Verse concert. SUMMARY:Noah Kahan
DESCRIPTION:Kronos Quartet\n\n\n\n\n\nwith special guest Briscoe \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n \n ABOUT Kronos Quartet\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs Noah Kahan changes\, he casts those experiences onto songs like light through a film projector. At the core of the music’s upbeat energy and unfiltered lyrics\, you’ll hear who he was before and who he became — almost in real-time. The Vermont singer still pens songs straight from the heart and still cracks jokes with his signature\, self-deprecating sense of humor; he’s just changed in all of the right ways (and chronicled them via his songwriting). \n\n\n\nHe gained that understanding through quite the journey from small town Vermont to global renown. He’s racked up over one billion streams\, released two full length albums (Busyhead\, 2019 and I Was / I Am\, 2021) and a mid-pandemic EP (Cape Elizabeth\, 2020)\, picked up a Gold Certification for “Hurt Somebody” feat. Jazz Times READ MORE\n\n\n\nThe headliner for the 2023 Purdue Jazz Festival puts a spin on Diz that you have to hear to believe. Sean Jones’ Dizzy Spellz has wowed New York audiences for years with its interpretation of the late\, great Dizzy Gillespie through Jones’ trumpet prowess and his stellar band\, which includes a turntablist and the tap dancing style of Brinae Ali. Ali pounds a board in Appalachian style\, with her rhythmic feet miked and manipulated to create otherworldly sounds. The turntables give the music a modern edge\, inventing new expressions just like Gillespie did as he explored thought-provoking jazz directions\, incorporating bebop and later helping introduce Afro-Cuban styles to American jazz audiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW SPONSORS

SUMMARY:Christian French
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW!\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor Christian French\, music isn’t just about self-expression—it’s about finding life’s silver living. The singer-songwriter and Indiana native has etched a space in pop music that examines the hardships of anxiety\, doubt and insecurity in a way that doesn’t brood or self-deprecate. Instead\, it filters his perspective through a lens of positivity\, connecting with a legion of fans who identify with his brand of optimism and authenticity in the face of everyday struggles. \n\n\n\nFans have witnessed firsthand how French has blossomed from a young upstart posting John Mayer covers to Soundcloud into an artist who isn’t afraid to speak his mind while concurrently developing his voice. With small waves of momentum and reaching larger audiences with his covers\, he secured opening slots on tour with Chelsea Cutler and Quinn XCII. \n\n\n\nAfter a string of hit singles like “head first” and “By Myself” and a pair of EPs\, French continues to embody a more confident sound that straddles pop and rock without losing the introspective clarity of its predecessor.  \n\n\n\nMusic for French is less about industry acclaim than it is about being understood by the fans that have followed him down this path. “I feel a lot of my crowd is of the young age where we’re trying to decide what to do with our lives and I know that’s a huge decision that weighs super heavily\,” he says. “I just want to help people feel more at peace\, understand that good things do take time\, and you don’t have to have everything figured out.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWITH SUPPORT FROM

SUMMARY:Silkroad presents Home Within
DESCRIPTION:RSVP \n\n\n\nGROUP ORDER FORM\n\n\n\n\nTickets: $15-20 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of the most visionary arts initiatives of our time – WNPR \n\n\n\n\nWhat is home? Is it where you grew up? The place that contributed most to who you’ve become? Perhaps it’s a dynamic concept most strongly defined by deep emotions. The latest production from Silkroad captures this impressionistic reflection in Home Within. Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and Syrian-Armenian visual artist Kevork Mourad created this audiovisual meditation on loss\, longing and the tragedy of Syrian conflict that has claimed over a half-million lives. With the Silkroad Ensemble (founded by Yo-Yo Ma to foster cross-cultural exchanges)\, Azmeh and Mourad expanded Home Within to include cello\, percussion\, voice and oud—their music melding together as animation augments Mourad’s real-time image-making. The result is a work both haunted by history and buoyed by the hope that those who still seek their home will soon discover it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHome Within artists\n\n\n\n\nKinan Azmeh\n\n\n\nKevork Mourad\n\n\n\nLayale Chaker\n\n\n\nShawn Conley\n\n\n\nKaren Ouzounian\n\n\n\nIssam Rafea\n\n\n\nShane Shanahan\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInterview with the artist\n\n\n\nWatch the discussion with Kinan Azmeh and Kevork Mourad. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Watch Video\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSUPPORT FROM

SUMMARY:Tabea Debus\, recorder
DESCRIPTION:Kronos Quartet\n\n\n\n\n\nGerman musician Tabea Debus and lutenist Paul Morton perform ‘Ohrwurm\,’ exploring centuries of recorder melodies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n \n ABOUT Kronos Quartet\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerforming melodies seemingly as old as time itself on an instrument with origins of perhaps equal vintage\, the German musician Tabea Debus has immersed herself in the through line of musical history from antiquity to the present. In Ohrwurm (German for “earworm”)\, Debus examines how melodies from every era of recorder repertoire transcend place\, form and time. Affording an up-close and intimate experience\, this exclusive salon engagement is perfectly suited both to the exquisitely detailed sonic world of the recorder and its accompaniment—in this case\, the lute\, as performed by Paul Morton. Debus has earned awards and accolades across four continents\, including the Concert Artists Guild International Competition in 2019. When not on stage or in the studio\, she still educates audiences and schoolchildren about the recorder’s history\, which dates back to the 15th century but expanded in size\, sound and possibility in the 20th century. Letting early melodies play alongside contemporary works\, Ohrwurm will take you on a journey that fills your ears—and soul—with music to remember. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNeat\, unforced\, beautifully articulated – The Times \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Know Before You Go\n \n \n\n\n\n \n Manage Tickets\n \n\n\n\n\n \n Directions & Parking\n \n\n\n\n\n \n Program\n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n \n Generous support from\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nADDITIONAL SUPPORT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConvos is Self-Supporting.Your Ticket Purchases and Generous GiftsPower it All! \n\n\n\n \n Learn More\n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSUPPORT FROM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInterview with the artist\n\n\n\nWatch the 5 part discussion with Tabea Debus. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Watch Video\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Enhance your experience\n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n BUILD YOUR OWN SEASON \n PICK5 + Save \n Did you know that if you buy 5 shows or more (not 5 tickets)\, you save an average of 10% off single-ticket prices? Rana delivers ravishing performances as instinctively human as they are intellectually engaged with compositional subtext. Her Convos program will highlight the technical and emotional complexities of Frédéric Chopin’s four scherzos\, ranging from tranquil and tender to terse and tense; a series of Claude Debussy études the composer considered suitable only for “remarkable hands”; and a deep exploration of emotional dissonance in an excerpt from Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka ballet. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nFrédéric Chopin: Scherzo No. 1 in B minor\, Op. 20 \n\n\n\nChopin: Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat minor\, Op. 31 \n\n\n\nChopin: Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp minor\, Op. 39 \n\n\n\nChopin: Scherzo No. 4 in E major\, Op. 54 \n\n\n\nClaude Debussy: Études\, Book 1 \n\n\n\nIgor Stravinsky: Petrushka

The New York Times\n\n\n\nIt’s no surprise that the family-friendly music of Mexican singer-songwriter Sonia De Los Santos ignites instant happiness. After all\, the title of her 2018 album\, ¡Alegria!\, is Spanish for “joy\,” and we can always stand to have more joy in our lives. Specializing in bilingual Spanish and English songs that captivate children\, parents and grandparents alike\, De Los Santos’s tunes blend Latin American styles from Mexico\, Peru and Colombia. Her fresh\, upbeat live performances transform songs about butterfly migration and feeling grateful for your family into dance-in-your-seat fun.
