Pulling from jazz\, soul\, and funk\, Benjamin’s music soars live and on record. She was part of the Monterey on Tour show with revered jazz vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling\, which included a concert at the Lincoln Center. \n\n\n\nThe charismatic Benjamin routinely engages her audiences on the mic and she is usually the most stylish in the venue. A recent concert in Germany saw her dressed in gold from head to toe\, matching her trusted sax. However\, that fit still could not outshine her massively impressive live performance\, which the Wall Street Journal called “assertive and vital.” \n\n\n\nPurdue Jazz Festival Schedule\n\n\n\nCommunity Jazz ShowcaseThursday\, January 18\, 7:30pm / Long Center for the Performing Arts \n\n\n\nFeaturing the Purdue Jazz Band and jazz bands from Tippecanoe County. \n\n\n\nLakecia Benjamin & PhoenixFriday\, January 19\, 8:00pmLoeb Playhouse at Stewart Center \n\n\n\nJazz Festival Competition and ClinicsSaturday\, January 20\, 8:00am – 6:00pmVarious locationsREGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED\, details \nVISIT ARTIST WEBSITEPURDUE JAZZ FESTIVAL\n\n\n\nEXPLORE THE SHOW\n\n\n\n\n\nBeyond the Spotlight: A Conversation with Lakecia BenjaminEducator Judd Danby talks with GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin about her musical roots\, pursuing mentors\, her album Phoenix\, and overcoming fears. He then recorded a live album at Purdue in 2022. \n\n\n\nBacked by a rhythm section\, Cohen is a talent that must be experienced live. Jazz Times READ MORE\n\n\n\nThe headliner for the 2023 Purdue Jazz Festival puts a spin on Diz that you have to hear to believe. Sean Jones’ Dizzy Spellz has wowed New York audiences for years with its interpretation of the late\, great Dizzy Gillespie through Jones’ trumpet prowess and his stellar band\, which includes a turntablist and the tap dancing style of Brinae Ali. Ali pounds a board in Appalachian style\, with her rhythmic feet miked and manipulated to create otherworldly sounds. The turntables give the music a modern edge\, inventing new expressions just like Gillespie did as he explored thought-provoking jazz directions\, incorporating bebop and later helping introduce Afro-Cuban styles to American jazz audiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW SPONSORS

SUMMARY:Cécile McLorin Salvant
DESCRIPTION:Salvant\, regularly and rightly\, is considered one of the greatest jazz singers of her generation\, but that label sells her short.—Rolling Stone \n\n\n\n\nA tuneful way to prepare for Halloween would be spinning up Cécile McLorin Salvant’s new album\, Ghost Song. The New York-based jazz singer wrote\, recorded\, and released the work all during the COVID-19 pandemic\, exploring not only the metaphor of the creepy ghost story but also ghosts of her past and present while feeling ghosted during pandemic lockdown. A French-Haitian phenom\, she returns to Convos as a multiple Grammy Award winner\, living up to the promise of her early career when she released her first record backed by Jean-François Bonnel and his Paris Quintet a year before she won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.  \n\n\n\nAccompaniment: \n\n\n\n\nSullivan Fortner\, piano\n\n\n\nMarvin Sewell\, guitar\n\n\n\nYasushi Nakamura\, bass\n\n\n\nAlexa Tarantino\, flute\n\n\n\nKeita Ogawa\, percussion\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW SPONSORS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRelated Links\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite\n\n\n\nFacebook\n\n\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\nSpotify

SUMMARY:Emmet Cohen Trio
DESCRIPTION:A delicate touch\, assured\, swaggering swing feel\, and debonair flow. ― The New York Times\nHarkening back to Harlem rent parties of yesteryear\, Live from Emmet’s Place invited online audiences inside the apartment of jazz pianist Emmet Cohen as one of the most welcome of COVID-era pivots. Convos supported these instant-favorite Monday-night livestreams in early 2021\, which grafted Cohen’s fluid grasp of the jazz canon with a deeply grooving rhythm section—featuring bassist Russell Hall and drummer Kyle Poole\, along with a remarkable cast of superlative “houseguests” to create one of the most successful-yet-intimate jazz experiences on the internet. Now\, Convos is thrilled to welcome Cohen’s trio along with some of your favorite Live From Emmet’s Place All-Stars for a real-time\, in-person performance. In 2019\, Cohen’s trio previously backed jazz vocalist Veronica Swift’s Purdue engagement during the same week in which Cohen was named the American Pianists Association’s Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz. Having since lit up legendary nightclubs and jazz festivals worldwide with his inimitable charm\, Cohen will now turn Loeb Playhouse into a Live from Emmet’s Place at Purdue.\n\n \n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES\n\n

SUMMARY:Joshua Redman Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“Unparalleled among horn players today” – JazzTimes\nWhat began as a brief detour into Brooklyn’s jazz scene for Joshua Redman blossomed into 30 years of ceaseless innovation\, acclaimed recording and passionate performance. Boasting influences that range from John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman to Prince and the Police\, Redman has forged a signature saxophone sound as provocative and forward-looking as it is hard-swinging and soulful. Propelled by bassist Reuben Rogers\, drummer Gregory Hutchinson and pianist Aaron Goldberg\, Redman’s Grammy®-nominated namesake quartet generates a tight and joyous onstage alchemy\, most recently captured on its 2019 album\, Come What May. The quartet’s performance represents Convocations’ kick-off contribution to the 2022 Purdue Jazz Festival\, a Purdue University Bands event that brings more than 2\,500 middle- and high-school students to campus for clinics and concerts. \n\n\n\n \n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES\n\n

SUMMARY:Live from Emmet's Place
DESCRIPTION:Since March of 2020\, the rising star Cohen\, who is the current American Pianists Association’s (APA) Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz\, has been holding forth every Monday night with his Live From Emmet’s Place webcast featuring his long-time bandmates Russell Hall (bass) and Kyle Poole (drums). What started as a one-off livestream from that very apartment in Harlem has now become a weekly phenomenon with a roster of A-list guest artists and a global audience numbering in the thousands. Cohen is no stranger to Indiana thanks to his connection to the APA and his April 2019 performance at Convocations in support of vocalist Veronica Swift. Now with his new Mack Avenue Records release\, Future Stride\, hitting the airwaves\, Convos has teamed up with Cohen to support his work and bring it to Convos audiences live every week. \nPurdue Convocations\, with the support of the Piano Giving Circle and Robert & Patricia Peyton Truitt have provided support for the Live From Emmet’s Place webcast\, the guest artists\, and the entire team it takes to produce the weekly show for the months of February\, March\, and April\, 2021. \nAdmission FREE/no tickets required (but tipping the working artists via the virtual tip-jar will undoubtedly warm your heart) \nWatch Live from Emmet’s Place on his Facebook page and YouTube channel. \n

SUMMARY:Artemis
DESCRIPTION:“Their set played like an expertly crafted mixtape\, moving from a knotty version of Thelonious Monk’s Brilliant Corners to a surprisingly dramatic arrangement of the Beatles’ ‘Fool on the Hill.’” – Rolling Stone \nTrue to its Greek goddess namesake\, the all-star jazz supergroup Artemis draws back its bow and strikes true at high-wire interplay and pure joy. Hailing from America\, Canada\, Israel\, Chile and Japan\, the sextet features Renee Rosnes (piano / musical director)\, Ingrid Jensen (trumpet)\, Anat Cohen (clarinet)\, Noriko Ueda (bass)\, Allison Miller (drums) and tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana\, the latter of whom Convocations presented to sold-out Carnahan Hall crowds in 2014. Regularly leading their own bands\, the artists of Artemis gather their genius for selections spanning Thelonious Monk to the Beatles—presented with passion\, power and sensitivity. This performance represents Convocations’ kick-off contribution to the 30th annual Purdue Jazz Festival\, a Purdue University Bands event bringing more than 2\,500 middle- and high-school students to campus for clinics and concerts. \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 7PM | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin composer\, jazz pianist and music educator Dr. Judd Danby for a pre-show discussion.

SUMMARY:Harlem 100
DESCRIPTION:The Harlem Renaissance represented an explosively creative\, resolutely empowering era—a cornucopia of expression and entertainment that formed America’s music and pursuit for Civil Rights. Today’s performers stoke this wildfire’s embers to spark new innovation in the iconic neighborhood. Created in collaboration with the National Jazz Museum\, Harlem 100 presents sounds and ideas from Fats Waller\, Duke Ellington\, Langston Hughes\, Billie Holiday\, and more in a modern-day variety-show homage to evenings at the Apollo\, Cotton Club or Alhambra. Dubbed a “full-bore entertainer” by The New York Times\, Michael Mwenso and his backing band\, the Shakes\, are joined by special-guest vocalists Vuyo Sotashe and Brianna Thomas and tap dancer Michela Marino Lerman. Harlem 100 is certain to satisfy your soul and let the good times roll. \nShow Time: 80-90 minutes with no intermission. \nPRE-SHOW TALK | 7PM | STEWART CENTER 310\nJoin Dr. Cornelius Bynum\, an Associate Professor in the Department of History\, for a discussion about the evening’s performance. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cameron Graves
DESCRIPTION:“His contrastingly romantic and ardent chord-work suggest what Rachmaninoff might have sounded like if he’d played in a contemporary fusion band.” — The Guardian \nHailed by Rolling Stone as “the house pianist for the party at the end of the universe\,” Cameron Graves is revitalizing funk\, jazz\, soul and fusion with kaleidoscopic\, kinetic energy. After cutting his teeth on Chopin\, Coltrane and Van Halen\, Graves co-founded L.A.’s West Coast Get Down (WCGD) alongside the supernova saxophone of Kamasi Washington. Known as the Wu-Tang Clan of jazz\, the WCGD collective is prolific when united or untethered. Graves’ 2017 debut album\, Planetary Prince\, emerged from a marathon WCGD recording session. Whether turning Ellington on its ear or achieving supersonic speeds typically reserved for prog rock and metal\, Graves transposes a fretboard ferocity and fluidity to 88 keys—music to quicken your pulse as easily as it broadens your consciousness.
