Unable to return to the war-torn place of my origin at the time—and plagued by violent discrimination in my adopted country—I fought to find safe haven. As a child\, the only constants were my grandfather\, our cows and dogs. Because of Grandpa’s wisdom and our bond\, I decided to pursue our love of animals as my profession. This is why I became a veterinarian.I studied Veterinary medicine at Makerere University\, Uganda; one of the best universities in Africa. I moved to America to advance my training with an internship in Kentucky and to give my family a better life.  I took the American Veterinary Association required tests; ECFVG/AVMA (at Mississippi State University) to get licensed in the USA. < BACK TO ARTICLEJyotisman Rath Jyotisman Rath Jyotisman Rath is a young avid researcher from India who specializes in sustainable electrochemical energy conversion and storage. The production\, remounted from the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis premiere in 2019\, was experienced by 30\,000 people\, not to mention hundreds of thousands more around the world who watched The MET: LIVE in HD rebroadcasts. Notably\, The Met restaged “Fire” again in the 2023-2024 season as a testament to its unparalleled success and achievement.  \n\n\n\nBlanchard is already a celebrated artist with seven Grammy® Awards\, two Oscar® nominations\, numerous acclaimed film scores and albums\, and his recent appointment as Executive Artistic Director for SFJazz\, but with this work\, he created a new cultural paradigm\, breaking barriers along the way. Based on the 2014 memoir of the same name by The New York Times columnist\, Charles M. Blow\, the story is an excavation of a painful past and the desire to move beyond it.  \n\n\n\nThis “concert excerpt” version\, adapted for Terence Blanchard and his band\, the E-Collective\, features the intrepid Turtle Island String Quartet and guest soloists\, plus visuals by Andrew F. Scott. This work reveals the depths of Blanchard’s capacity to create a new musical world filled with pathos\, humanity\, and resilience. \n\n\n\nPerformed by Terence Blanchard and The E-CollectiveFeaturing Turtle Island Quartet and vocalists Adrienne Danrich and Norman GarrettLibretto by Kasi LemmonsBased on the book by Charles M. SUMMARY:A Conversation With Yo-Yo Ma
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation With Yo-Yo Ma\nJeffrey Brown\, PBS NewsHour Correspondent\, moderator\n\n\n\nPresented by the Purdue Presidential Lecture Series\n\n\n\nPowered by Purdue Convocations\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTANDBY SEATING\n\n\n\nThis event is sold out. If you do not have a free ticket\, a designated standby line will be formed outside Elliott Hall if additional seating becomes available. \nIMPORTANT ENTRY INFO\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT\nPurdue University President Mung Chiang and the Purdue Presidential Lecture Series present the renowned cellist\, recording artist\, and humanitarian leader Yo-Yo Ma in a special engagement moderated by PBS NewsHour correspondent Jeffrey Brown. Through personal anecdotes\, thoughtful inquiry\, and musical interludes\, Yo-Yo Ma explores how culture can help us all seek truth\, build trust and act in service of one another. \n\n\n\nYo-Yo Ma’s multi-faceted career is testament to his belief in culture’s power to generate trust and understanding. Whether performing new or familiar works for cello\, bringing communities together to explore culture’s role in society\, or engaging unexpected musical forms\, Yo-Yo strives to foster connections that stimulate the imagination and reinforce our humanity. Among his many roles\, Yo-Yo is a United Nations Messenger of Peace and the first artist ever appointed to the World Economic Forum’s board of trustees. His discography of more than 120 albums (including 19 Grammy Award winners) ranges from iconic renditions of the Western classical canon to recordings that defy categorization.   \n\n\n\nYo-Yo was born in 1955 to Chinese parents living in Paris. He began to study the cello with his father at age four and three years later moved with his family to New York City\, where he continued his cello studies at the Juilliard School before pursuing a liberal arts education at Harvard. He has received numerous awards\, including the Avery Fisher Prize (1978)\, the National Medal of the Arts (2001)\, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2010)\, Kennedy Center Honors (2011)\, the Polar Music Prize (2012)\, and the Birgit Nilsson Prize (2022). He has performed for nine American presidents\, most recently on the occasion of President Biden’s inauguration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt sounds superhuman\, but it was just the opposite. It was fully human\, perfect and imperfect at the same time\, easy and difficult\, marked by attempt and reward. This is Ma’s skill. He doesn’t make his music something to marvel at. He makes it a gift. Created for you himself. The Denver Post \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJeffrey Brown\, PBS NewsHour Correspondent \nModerator\n\n\n\nJeffrey Brown\, in a career spanning 30 years with PBS’s NewsHour\, has served as co-anchor\, studio moderator\, and field reporter on a wide range of national and international issues around the nation and globe. He has profiled many of the world’s leading writers\, musicians\, actors\, and artists\, and led inquiry into the status of cultural heritage in the United States and abroad.   \n\n\n\n\nPurdue University President Mung Chiang \n“Arts connects and inspires. Purdue is a university in the fullest sense when we welcome distinguished artists to our campus\,” Purdue President Mung Chiang said. “It is particularly exciting to announce the unique Presidential Lecture Series event with Yo-Yo Ma\, a living legend in the world of music and humanity.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPICK5 + SAVE Did you know that if you buy 5 shows or more (not 5 tickets)\, you save an average of 15% off single-ticket prices? A musical pioneer in every sense of the word\, Flash transformed the turntable into an expressive and complex instrument\, and introduced the world to record scratching\, beat juggling\, and breaks. His mastery of these techniques elevated DJ’ing to an art form\, while his legendary parties in the South Bronx became the cradle of hip-hop culture. \n\n\n\nThis audiovisual lecture/demonstration is an educational\, entertaining\, and interactive experience that takes you on a journey with one of the founding fathers of hip-hop. As the architect of the quick mix theory\, Grandmaster Flash will show you how as a teenager\, he used his knowledge of electronic repair to experiment with different styles and techniques and bridge the gap between musical genres—incorporating elements of funk\, soul\, and disco into his mixes. Now\, as we celebrate 50 years of hip-hop\, a whole new generation will experience a once in a lifetime hip-hop history lesson from one of the creators and legends in the genre. \n\n\n\nServing as host and panelist will be Dr. Marlo David\, director of African American Studies and Research Center in Purdue University College of Liberal Arts. SUMMARY:Silkroad presents Home Within
DESCRIPTION:RSVP \n\n\n\nGROUP ORDER FORM\n\n\n\n\nTickets: $15-20 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of the most visionary arts initiatives of our time – WNPR \n\n\n\n\nWhat is home? Is it where you grew up? The place that contributed most to who you’ve become? Perhaps it’s a dynamic concept most strongly defined by deep emotions. The latest production from Silkroad captures this impressionistic reflection in Home Within. Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and Syrian-Armenian visual artist Kevork Mourad created this audiovisual meditation on loss\, longing and the tragedy of Syrian conflict that has claimed over a half-million lives. With the Silkroad Ensemble (founded by Yo-Yo Ma to foster cross-cultural exchanges)\, Azmeh and Mourad expanded Home Within to include cello\, percussion\, voice and oud—their music melding together as animation augments Mourad’s real-time image-making. The result is a work both haunted by history and buoyed by the hope that those who still seek their home will soon discover it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHome Within artists\n\n\n\n\nKinan Azmeh\n\n\n\nKevork Mourad\n\n\n\nLayale Chaker\n\n\n\nShawn Conley\n\n\n\nKaren Ouzounian\n\n\n\nIssam Rafea\n\n\n\nShane Shanahan\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInterview with the artist\n\n\n\nWatch the discussion with Kinan Azmeh and Kevork Mourad. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Watch Video\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSUPPORT FROM

SUMMARY:Macbeth
DESCRIPTION:Imagine a tragic tale about the physical and psychological toll of political ambition and power-mongering. Does that sound eerily current or quaintly historic? Or is it simply that the themes of Shakespeare’s classic “Scottish Play” remain eminently applicable after 400-plus years? Palace intrigue and shocking betrayals are nothing new. However\, the highly regarded Aquila Theatre will make the relevance surprisingly fresh with their creative vision of this classic. Having toured nationwide for decades\, Aquila continues to earn recognition\, as famed producer and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda recently invited them to celebrate the National Endowment for the Arts in the U.S. Capitol. This electrifying rendition of Macbeth is keenly aware that a certain sound and fury persists. \n\n\n\nThis performance is part of a collaboration with the Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Curriculum to present a two-production residency with Aquila Theatre Company—featuring The Great Gatsby and Macbeth. Following engagements in prior seasons with productions of Frankenstein\, The Odyssey and 1984\, Convocations will again engender deep curricular engagement across campus for students in the Cornerstone program. Faculty across all disciplines\, however\, are also invited to connect to these works for your students. SUMMARY:The Great Gatsby
DESCRIPTION:Beautifully spoken\, dramatically revealing and crystalline in effect. ― The New Yorker \n\n\n\n\nPublished in 1925\, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby remains a vivid account of how\, in the absence of true equality\, pursuing the “American dream” can lead to devastating effects. Jay Gatsby\, a working-class war veteran\, reinvents himself as a self-made millionaire to become the man he believes his one-time love\, wealthy heiress Daisy Buchanan\, would want. Their rekindled affair triggers a domino effect of destruction\, in which obsession masquerades as love and the wealthy wield prejudice as a weapon. Known for its powerful immersion in classic texts\, Aquila Theatre brings a soberingly relevant reimagination of Fitzgerald’s classic in which Gatsby is a man of color\, setting the stage for themes of class\, racism and discrimination to play vividly inside the meaning of the American dream. \n\n\n\nThis performance is part of a collaboration with the Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Curriculum to This performance is part of a collaboration with the Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Curriculum to present a two-production residency with Aquila Theatre Company—featuring The Great Gatsby and Macbeth. SUMMARY:Dökk - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: October 26\, 2021\n\n\n\nDökk\, by the Milan\, Italy-based company\, fuse*\, was scheduled to perform in Loeb Playhouse on February 3\, 2022. Due to COVID-19 related complications\, the U.S. tour has been cancelled.  While the Convocations team is currently working to reschedule the performance for a future date\, all tickets purchased for the performance will be refunded automatically. \n\n\n\nIf you purchased with a credit card\, the credit should appear on your billing statement within the next 7-10 business days. Any payments made by cash or check will be refunded via university check and mailed to the current address on file within the next 30 days.  Call (765) 494-3933 for more information. \n\n\n\nWhat if data were a dance partner? Dökk is a daring\, dynamic journey into the subconscious\, the latest expression of artistry through emerging digital technology from Italy’s fuse*. Named after the Icelandic word for “darkness\,” Dökk uses software to synthesize real-time data from four simultaneous sources: Dökk’s musical score; the movement of performer / choreographer Elena Annovi; her heartbeat; and emotional analysis of social media trends at that very moment. This data mashup is vividly visualized through a stunning 3D projection environment. As these data sources shift and change\, each performance of Dökk becomes one-of-a-kind—evoking life’s own random\, unforeseeable whims. Both experimental and empirical\, Dökk illuminates the invisible connections among us all in an intimate\, immersive fusion of light\, sound\, space and movement. \n\n\n\n\nAn unexpected synesthesia of pure cognitive escape.— Exibart \n\n\n\n\nThis engagement with fuse* is a continuation of Purdue Convocations’ Innovator-In-Residence platform—a forum for the investigation of new works that examine\, question and propose ideas in the fluid nexus where humanity and technology intersect. This production further extends the discussion of real-time interactivity from our previous engagement in this series\, the AI-driven musical improvisation of Shimon Robot and Friends—which Convocations presented in February of 2017. \n\n\n\nPROTECT PURDUE POLICIES
